am aquiring (hopefully) a fj45 ute it has a good spring lift and 35' tryes and a cut down tray, and a bonus of a 3f engine with holly350 carb.
dose this motor spin 35's ok (for the moment anyway).
Anyway i plan on putting some wider diffs under it looking at maybe gq/gu diffs pending on price or maybe 60's diffs and a 60's 5 speed
alsowant to put in a 351 clevo is much work involved in doing this conversion to a 60's 5spead
are there any other sugestions?
cheers

Longer shackles, longer main springs, remove a leaf or two and have the leaves reset. This will give quite good flex.
Also as a point of interest the utes and troopies are 45. and the shorties are 40.

yeh do it as i go
i know in the end i wana run 38's or 39's would it be a good idea to go 60 series axels and diffs and a 3/4 epileptic spring set up?
or are the 45's exels and gearbox strong enough to hold up to that kind of punishment

with 38's i am thinking you would want the extra track of the 60 diffs just to keep you on all four. well three at least

yeh the 60 series diffs sound like the go any idea on how much they cost from wreckers also would it be a good idea to grab a 60 series 5spd and transfer,
note this is a pre 1979 model so i'm not sure wheather this 60 stuff will fit without majour mods.
?do the utes come with power steering?

Prob the best idea to find a rusted or rolled 60 that you could get parts from. i know one down here with a 350 for 1500 but its a bit of a drive

60 diff's - yes. for strenghten and width mixed with full flip rims
P/s - stock 40's steering/ power or not it's all POO. just go 60 or 80 or even 100.
Transfer - 40's came with 2 piece case where as most 60's had a 1 piece caes. 60's case take tranfer gears, after changing sharfts.
suspension - depending what ya wanna spend, streched on coils would be ideal, but there is SPOA and extended wheel base.
with the engine - 250 ford crossflow, C4 auto, marks transfer adaptor plate to 60's transfer case full of 68% reduction gears with a diff mounted hand brake.
sort'd
all this has $$ attached thats all that stop's any one!!!!!!!

!!
think ya got that one backwards dood... late model 40's and all 60 series had "split cases"... early 40's had single piece cases. the split cases take reduction gears. i don't think people make single piece reduction gears.
oh and single piece cases are poo... they break easily

Have you guys seen this?
It's a one piece steel case transfer to fit older landcruisers with a 4:1 low range ratio. More details here:
http://www.advanceadapters.com/orion.html
It's available from Marks4WD, the sole Australian distributor of Advance Adapters products.

I'd vote against that idea incase they end up having a seizure on a side angle and cause you to flop.

did i use the wrong term on that one?
would it be cheaper to go for a all coil set up and get gq diffs or go sprung over with 60 diffs hmm
Then what is it called when u have like a swivell shackel at the rear of leaf and a controll arm thing at the front of spring.
i have seen it befor and i thought it was called a epyleptic set up, corect me if i'm wrong.

I think the word you are looking for is Elliptical. Didn't mean to take the piss, thought it was a typo.
Dont know a whole lot about the different set ups (semi, 1/4, 3/4) but there may be a bit of info here if you try a search, probably more on pirate but I think you have to be a member these days to search there.
btw, I may be able to help you with 60 diffs if you decide to go that way.

yeh it depends on what price they are, coils would be great but i think i'll stick with leaves and 60 series axels for the time being all though i have to find a truck first.
do you know if petrol and deisel 60's had diferent diff ratio's?
cheers

I'm pretty sure petrol and diesel 60's both came with standard 4.1 diff ratios.
I have some complete 60 diffs too if you want to buy em!!!
