Weird Hilux headlight prob

Hi folks, nice to meet you all :)

I have an odd problem with my '83 LN46 Hilux.

Basically it's an intermittant fault on the headlight dip.

When the dip arm is pulled forward, the lights 'flash' as normal.

But when the arm is pushed into the high beam position, sometimes it works perfectly and others the lights go completely off.

The blue 'beam' warning lamp on the dash illuminates every time, regardless of whether the lights have cut out or not.

I have pulled apart the switches on the steering column and found that the brass contacts for the dip switch are in excellent, clean condition and making good firm contacts, so I have tentatively elminated that as a cause.

Next thing to check is relays, if any.

Does anyone know where they might be located on the LN46 and perhaps have any other ideas as to the cause of this fault?

Thanks :)

get a test light and check there is a output on high, low and park when not working. sounds like switch, not sure on the car but the relay is probly under bonet. when not working swap the relay with another one in the box thats thghe same.should tell u if its the rel;ay

its an easy fix mate had the same thing happen in my 84 lux pull the steering wheel off remove your steerign column cover and remove the switch box that your light levers go into. pull the cover off that and sand in between or the little terminals in there. from memory they are liek strips of steel. mine had corrosion on it and when switched to highbeam they lsot power and all turned off. hope this helps

hi i had same prob and it drove me nuts,i rewired a t the relays to bypass the prob, then it used to do other stuff lioke fade to a low voltage .they used to just cut out and if i held the hi beam flash on up for a while it would eventually heat up the contacts and stay on when released.of all the dilemmas with mechanicals electrical stuff is the weirdest because you have to search for the weakest point of escape or short to earth.which can be a legthly procedure.god help us with patience.
imagine cruising along the northern territory dessert plains at night doin 100 and bang no lights.bloody lucky i have good driving spotties as back up.
