Outer Limits 4x4 Board

(Transfer-case Knob that is you sicko)

Since Ive owned our D1a the transfer-case knob has been fairly stiff....

but now after going for a play at our club's track yesterday I need both hands to reef it out of centre diff lock and back into AWD High for road use.

Is the gear change shaft a commen problem or wear issue?

On the weekend I will pull out the centre console and see what I can find at the changer....Im hoping it will be just something worn and can be replaced or repaired easy.

Any help guys please?

Assuming you are talking the diff lock selection only (side to side movement) it should be kind of firm, but nowhere near being stiff. I'd say the linkages on top of the nose of the transfer case are clogged with dirt etc.... Try getting under it and giving the linkage a really good spray with WD40 (maybe a bit of a wirebrush up first, if you can get to it - bodylift helps here )

I assume you are talking about diff lock only here, if you are talking of the shift from low range to high (and vice versa) this will be stiff/impossible if the car is stationary. You will note in all classic rangies that there is a plaque in front of the lever which suggests switching ranges at about 5-8km/h, as does the Disco owners manual. Basically all you need is to be rolling slowly, and change, and hold the lever against the gate with a light to firm pressure, and you will feel it drop into whichever range you are selecting when the gears rotate into place - this is due to the dog tooth arrangement of the high low selector.

Fixed...its all good...just had mud and crap around linkage...didnt have as much as I thoght there would be to corse such an issue

Anyway just kick out mud with srewdriver and then hit with high pressure hose...today I will give a good dose with wd40...better than its ever been...as you say looking forward to getting my lift to make that job a little easyer next time.

Might be worth trying something other than wd40. As I have used it on door hinges and other stuff on my old SWB GQ. And found it attracted some dirt and it set like concrete, that not even a pressure washer would remove.
I have been using INOX which seems abit better. But am open to other options as well.
