Rocky or Jimny

Hi Guys

I currently own a GU and thinking of down sizing to either a Rocky 2.8TD or the 1.3P Jimny

I’ve done a heap of research for Jimny and Suzuki and despite working for Daihatsu I know very little of there capability

With little biasness as possible what are the pos and negs of these cars

Depends what you want. Touring(Rocky hands down), DD with mild weekend work(I'd go the jimmny), weekend warrior that's bearable as a DD aswell(Rocky hands down), as far as available mods go the jimmny will of course cane the rocky, but in stock form they are not even in the same league. Also have the benifit of Diesel in the Rocky. And as it will no doubt be older than the Jimmny you wont cry as much when you scratch/dent it ;)

Stock Jimmny 'flex', or lack thereof:

This is a pic of the one my friend had for a few months, it would bottom out everywhere, and pop wheels really easy.

Dont really have any flex pics of mine stock but:
This is a stock Rocky ute, ~100mm longer WB than mine, doing a track I KNOW the jimmny wouldn't have done
Image
Mine on same track but 2" springs/-swaybar

Plus as you can see in the pics you'll have loads more room for gear in the rocky, and IMO a generally tougher car. Of course, to go against this is lack of mods and sometimes harder to find parts. I know i'm biased but having seen the jimmny in action its a POS offroad - stock atleast. In the spot where the 1st pic was taken mine didn't even pop a wheel when it was stock

Wow! There's a bit of a size (and weight) difference between those two choices.

The Rocky may not be all that cheaper to run than your Patrol?

You rekon?? :? I consistently get between 10-12L/100k's driving a mix between traffic/80 zones... if a patrols the same I'm gonna really try and save $$ for the upgrade.

But my friends jimmny was getting between 6-8L/100ks

With overall fuel consumption of 11.1 litres/100 km, the 3.0 litre Patrol was better than both the 4.2 litre (13.1) and the old 2.8 litre (12.9). In common with most diesels, the 3.0 litre engine performs best within a defined rev range and this is between about 2000 and 3000 rpm.

;)

Then again, there was no mention of downsizing to save money? :?

It depends if you want to downsize or DOWNsize... lol

The Jimny has bugger all room inside for luggage etc but is very economical.

As said, a stock Rocky will go so much further than a Jimny offroad, but if into modifications a lot, a Jimny probably has better aftermarket options.

The one thing is the 2.8TD never feels like it hasn't got enough power.
And Rocky's are just tough

The only downside for a Rocky is lack of parts.
Other than that they are one of the best 4x4s out there.

No, you need lockers coz you cant go where we can!

Coils - you say it like no Rocky has ever had them... lol

And i'll take up a challenge with a comparable Jimny anyday... And I've even got IFS.. lol The solids would cane it!

What's a pepsi challenge? I dunno what it is... but bring your money, you'll be needing it :D

I'll put mine up against a jimmny withe the same mods (2" sus)...even if it had more i reckon a rocky would be in with a chance.

A couple of mates have jimny's and yes stock they do suck offroad....... but modified a bit they're pretty good.

One has 4" susp, 2" body, 31 simex muds, rear arb and rockhoppers and it goes great  Regarding space remove the rear seats and you have enough room for 2 up touring....... they just don't work with more than that. Roof racks make all the difference.

Maybe not ideal if you like to beat on your car offroad a few bits have bent and twisted

Hahahahaha I posted this on the Thursday at work and don’t have the internet at home hahahahahah I didn’t think it would start a brawl heheheh

My problem is that if you can’t mod a 4x4 they all have there limits including my patrol so diff locks body and suspension lifts and gears are a necessity for me

And although Rock has the size and a diesel power plant that has 75kw appose to 50kw of the Jimny if cant be lifted locked or geared there pretty useless for Rock hopping and Mud work

Spring ova, welded front, welded rear if your ambitous. Offset rims 31"-33" Pedes. What more could you want for a 4b of this size range.

And dw bout crawler gears, thay only slow you down ;) :D

EDIT: and you can actually lift them its the other mods that you can't get like gears/locks. Any leafspring joint can make you new leaves. BL is available also. But if i was gunna do a rocky trail pig on a budget i'd just do what i've stated above.

MMMMMM welded diffs no thanks a little bodgy I like getting home after a big day out are all rock leaf and are you able to get a body lift or is it a mono frame

bodylift is possible for feroza and rocky  .

The early model rocky have all leaf springs, later model has IFS front and coil rear

Pretty sure they all have full chassis so BL is a go, pre 93 was leaves and solid (?).... 91-93ish was coils/solid??? could be wrong but basically there. Welded front wouldn't be that bad, i planing on it in the long run. If u blow something atleast u still got 2wd. Wouldn't do rear personally unless it was really gonna become a trail pig

Pre Aug/1993 = Solid axles F+R, leaf sprung
Post Aug/1993 = IFS, Coiled solid rear axle

Crawler gears useless??? Having owned a rocky with 31's on it, the crawl ratio sucked (f75td). Went from the rocky to the zook with crawler gears (bout 70:1) and 32 inch swampers. Lockers etc, - no way in hell i would go back. Have driven rocky, feroza, zook and jimny offroad. Jimny had lift+ tyres, gearing and rear locker. Easily killed feroza and beat my old rocky. Had nothing on my zook though.

Im gonna be a stick in the mud here and get back to the topic... for a little while anyrate...

Unfortunatley rockys are getting very old. Whereas Jimnys are still available (me thinks... I know Suzuki is spose to be pulling/pulled the pin on the last proper midget 4wd with a t-case soon).
Unless you can find a rocky with a good service history, I'd have to say i'd go the jimny (cringe). Don't get me wrong, I love my rocky to bits and wouldn't swap it for the world, but I have had many mechanical dramas that would have seen other non-mechanically minded owners give up on it many moons ago.

Because your used to the coils on the Patrol, I would only look at post-93 coil rocky's. Again, don't get me wrong, solid front and rears rule (in the car sense... mind out of the gutter) but coils are better on road, and the coil IFS on the rocky's does work pretty well. (The coil rear almost makes up for the lack of flex in the front).
Look for a good service history with regular oil changes. Check the cooling system VERY carefully. Look for replaced radiators, new gasket goo or any possible signs of overheating. The DL motor doesn't take to kindly to being overheated and can leave nasty repair bills lerking in the future... Trust me

Other downsides already mentioned are the spare parts and accesorries.

Also as mentioned you may not save much on the fuel bill with a rocky compared to a 3.0DiD GU patrol as Ive heard they are pretty frugal when treated nice. But if this is not your motivation, then scrub this bit.

If your mechanically minded and like to tinker with your fourby to make it better, i'd go the Rocky. :D
If you just want a 4wd with four wheels that turn and a new car warranty... go the jimny. ;)

Oh?????? Who said lockers are not available for Rockys?????

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

And suspension and body lifts are a piece of cake to do.

Geez, you can even get winches for them.
