60 Series TD Very Sluggish

Father in law bought an 86 model turbo diesel cruiser to take away hunting and fishing so he doesnt destroy his 100 series. It gets along fine with no load, but as soon as you hook a trailer on or load it up its hopeless. I tried to tow a tri axle trailer with half a meter of crushed rock in it and it wouldn't crack 60 on the highway. Towed 2m of it home the night before with my ute without a drama which got us thinking.

Its done 245,000ks with a recently rebuilt 2h. apparently it had turbo work done as well. Its an immaculate car inside and out and been very well looked after. Its got a boost guage and basically the turbo seems to be doing nothing until about 1500rpm, then its pulling about 2psi. 1800 about 4psi, 2200 about 6 psi, 2500 about 7 or 8, and pulls about 11 psi at 3200rpm. So basically the turbo seems like its doing sweet fa unless you are thrashing the bags out of it.

I've got a mate with an 85 model with an aftermarket turbo, and his will do an easy 110 with 1500kgs of builders trailer behind it.

Anyone got any ideas on whats wrong with ours, or is it just the aftermarket turbo making the difference on my mates?

Thanks.

Cheers, Schmidty

Sounds to me like the turbo is to big.

Thats along the lines i was thinking. Not spooling up fast enough. Its got "mike viney turbo" stickers under the bonnet, and a QLD mod plate under the bonnet so i was tipping it was possibly a straight diesel thats been modified. It's come from redcliffe as far as i know, so i'm not sure on QLD mod codes so i've never founf out what the mod was. Tipping its the turbo though. How can i find out if it was a factory turbo or not?

2H was N/A from factory
12HT is factory turbo

Can't help with the QLD mod codes, but I reckon you're right.

Mike Viney is a pretty knowledgable man when it comes to turbos...so if the stickers are there, why not call him. He would know the setup, and would stand a good chance of solving any problems.

Does the turbo have a wastegate? It may be bleeding off exhaust gas, without making boost.

My turbo 60 used to make 12psi at 2000rpm. This can be affected by fuelling levels also.

Overfuelling generates more boost lower down in the rev range. Not enough fuelling means it will take ages to build up a head of steam.
