Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I'm looking at getting myself a new set of day to day tyres & I'm considering either the new STT's or the M/T MTZ's . I've heard plenty of good reports on the STT's but haven't spoken to anyone about the Mickey Thompson MTZ's.

I'm keen to hear about their performance offroad? onroad? k's I can expect to get out of them on a GU wagon? Sidewall strength? Etc, Etc.....

I have the STTs and would be happy to have them again. But I might look at the MTZ next time, too.

I had the MTR's before the Coopers & whilst I was reasonabley happy with their performance on & off-road, they were wearing too quick so I p!ssed them off ....

I have found that through the touring etc we do, the MTR is still the best touring tyre, and the MTZ did puncture on the one set we just did the madigan line and Hay river with, 285's on a 100, but they only had 2, through the tread block, and the new STT's on a 100 also, had 5 on the same trip, the only 2 vehicles with no punctures were mine with 37 xterrains and a 80 with 285 pro comp all terrains, all the other vehicles on MTRs of the 9 vehicles in total had 4 punctures.

We dont allow BFG on our more extreme trips any more, as the tyre tends to get destroyed, rather than punctured, with the steel belts not covering the whole tread section any more.

The MTZ's did seem to drive ok on the road though, but cant say how they are wearing as they have only done the one trip so far.

As i said in another thread my old mtrs wore really well. I have just had the MTZs put on my wagon (GQ) and same day drove to Colo from brisbane and was damn happy with them concidering i was towing my buggy. As far as off road goes i wouldnt know but they are damn quiet on road. Now my no muffler exhaust is deffening. It didnt sound that loud with the mtrs cause of the tire noise. Cheers Jamie

It doesn't bother me how they go in the more extreme conditions (I've got the Pedes for the fun stuff) but mainly touring through the High Country & the odd weekend drive here & there.

I've had MTR's, ST's and currently STT's on my GU and my vote would be anything but coopers The STT are a reasonably tyre off road but i have had all sorts of viabrations out of them after wheeling on a weekend then having to wait till they go round again after a weeks driving on road to get rid of the vibs and shudders and noise. Also they are about 1 1/2inches smaller than there meant to be. 315/75/16 measure 33inch on a new tyre that has never been driven on when they are meant to be 34.6inches.

Slight hijack here, but what K's / wear do you get out of the x-terrains. I am considering running them on my tourer on the 17" Gu 05 rims.....

done 23000km of 4wding in the last 6 months on them, including desert trips, snow trips, high country, 2 weeks in tassie, and 75% of the tread still on, afew chips, and no punctures, which was same for the 16" ones I ran before these ones.

I've had both the Cooper STTs and the Mickey Thompson MTZs on my Disco 3, so I can give you a direct comparison.

Firstly on-road, despite the seeming similarity in treads, the MTZs are _much_ quieter, and seem to pull up better in the wet - the STTs triggered the ABS a couple of times, whereas in the same situation, the MTZs don't.

Off-road, in mud the MTZs self-clean better than the STTs, and grip better on steep rocky tracks. I haven't tried the MTZs on sand yet, but I suspect they'd be pretty similar to the STTs.

As I haven't had either set for mor than 5000 km or so, I can't comment on wear. THe MTZ's compound seems softer, but time will tell.

Just as I have my mind made up to get the Mickeys you bring another tyre into the mix.
You brought them up, so tell me how do they compare to the Mickeys and STT's?

I got a set of 32x11.5x15's fitted for $220 each for the wifes jeep.

They handle the road better than my bfg's and are better in the mud than my bfgs, or old STTs were. Can't really comment on wear as they've only done about 2000 kms. no sign of wear yet.

can't comment on MTZ or new STTs' either as i've never run them

but cheap tyre that works. just another thing to consider

they come in sizes up to 35

I've decided to bite the bullet & go with the MTZ's .

Haven't had any bad reports on them though no-one's done enough k's on them to comment on wear & tear

I picked up my MTZ's today from Ryano. They look bling.
Time will tell but I am impressed so far and I am very pleased with my decision.

I needed a tough tyre that will last, that will self clean in mud, are quiet enough to do some outback touring with a caravan and a tyre that can match it in the bush with the best and I reckon this tyre will do it for me. I got a 33 inch tyre and I also like the fact that Mickey Thompson tyres are a big 33 for diff clearance.

I think the STT would be a great tyre and I would get them over the MTR's, just that I think the MTZ's are better for my application in my opinion. I think the STT's might be a bit better on the road.

i have to disagree with most the stt are great had them on the car for 10,000k no problems great on the road and fantastic in the bush did a trip to buxton loved them heaps of big rocks and mud no chips or damage and i was running 36psi..
stt way to go.

bingham has a set on his gu and they rock. I saw the truck driven through trails that i thought the gu would never get through, rocky and dry as I have seen. i was having big probs keeping traction on the wr400 and parky drove without much wheelspin up some of the snottyiest of hills. If I didn't have radial claws I would have mtz

Happy with rubber have done most bar sand work incl mud rock gravel a few comments on how well it held dirt roads at speed, not happy cleaning the mess of numerous pisswrecks outta my car....

Out of the 270 vehicles odd taken on trips in the last few years by me, the ST and STT are first for amount of punctures, and 2nd behind BFG's for most destroyed tyres, and what makes this data sound worse, is that BFG were less than 10% of the tyres fitted to those vehicles, and St and STT less than 40% of the vehicles.

Hence we now dont allow BFG on outback trips, [and we arent the only ones doing this] but like or recent madigan line trip, we have 2 vehicles on Pro Comps, no punctures, one on MTZ's 2 punctures [through the tread block into the carcass] MTR's 4 punctures across 5 vehicles and one vehicle with new STT's had 5 punctures, and 2 destroyed tyres with his puntures mainly sidewall related.

These ratio's are pretty close [mtr's had more than ususal this year, but we did alot of cross country desert, no tracks, and one was tyre pressure related on the Oodnadatta track on the way up] to total stats over the last few years we have kept.
