Leaky Power Steering

I was interested in putting a GU steering box in the mav as mine is leaking fluid and wanted to upgrade. However I'm a little short on funds at the moment so it may have to wait. Can I or do I need to rebuild the one I have or just replace a seal and should be all good. I feel that the steering is somewhat heavier than it used to be but the fluid is right as I've been topping it up, its a slow leak and I think looks worse than what it is. Sorry for the average pic, its from under the vehicle looking up at it.

can you see where its leaking from? i was quoted $300 plus to have mine rebuilt, so i went to the wreckers and bought a GU box and fitted that, the GU box cost me $425 from franks parts plus (smithfield NSW)

looks like something that i pulled out from our crab trap. unless you are a steer/hydro spcialist , its not worth it.
re: gu ; sorry , dont know about "clean swap" . try some nulon , has done wonders in the past.

Are you sure it's the box and not the hoses? Your pic appears to show a leak in a hose at the top of the frame.
It is common for the hoses to fail and leak as they age. If this is your problem, they are a relatively cheap repair and can be custom made at places like Enzed.

mine looked like that , it was leaking from where the steering hooked up to the box at the top, nissan do seal the 2 seals for it wernt that dear eaither no more then 20 bucks for 1 i think,
but also look at the lines at the top of the frame it looks a bit leaky,

you can pick up a complete seal kit for them at an auto shop its about
$70 and it takes about an hour or so once you have the pitman arm of. (thats the hardest bit)

i found that mine leaked cause the hoses went brittle/hard and wouldn't seal any more, easy fixed, went and got some 8mm hose and some new clamps.
btw. gu box straight swap......sort of......will bolt up no worrys, hoses and everything...........except the steering arm/rod. the gq box has the tie rod end (TRE) bolt up from underneath, the GU box has the T.R.E bolt up from on top. so you cant use the GQ steering rod. you need an adjustible one. the GU box is less turns lock 2 lock as well.
there was a thread a couple of days ago on this subject.
ps. i paid 300 for my GU box. didnt know anybody at the wreckers, just told them it wasnt worth that much.
this might help too
