i dont have that with my GQ but the 60seires i got i lost 5ths gear all together
to give an idea the gear box center in dandenong here in victoria
wants $1250 just to do all seals and bearings from gearbox to transfer case any extra work i want will cost extra like to fix that 5th gear,

just ring up a few joint in ya brake times at work and find out a few prices

jumping out of third sounds like a worn selector it happened to my dads patrol a few years back....... we pulled the inspection plate off the side of the box and found the selector with the worn corner. We then took it out, miged it up, ground it all square again and put it back in......
box was like new, did 50000ks before we soled it and it was still going strong

It can be: Weak selector shaft springs. You can put washers under them to increase pressure...OR (unlikely) worn gearstick bush not allowing the gear to be engaged properly.
