4.1 Ford Crossflow in a G60

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone knows were you can get a some work done to 4.1L crossflow (pre 1984 leaded engine). Looking at getting it bored out 40 or 60thou and a crow cam stuck in it. However I am not a mechanic but I do know what a screwdriver looks like.

Or is there an easier way to get an addition 30% of power out of it.

Thanks James

get an alloy head and webber carby from a xe/xf and wack on it
you will get more power and they weigh much less

a cam is good but i wouldnt get it bored there a big 6 already and any bigger and they jsut get lazy

stick in a high torque cam and an alloy head and webber carb and you should be happy

mate, i had a 250 xflow in my early cortina, and man did it boogy!!
cain inlet manifold, 350 2 bbl holley, extactors, and my secret ingredient,,,
the cam out of a fuel injected xe. just give the bores a clean and slip in hyperutectic (spell) pistons and you'll have a torque monster...

350 holley and XE electronic dizzy. Cam. Decent size exhaust.

If you've got an iron head then alloy might be worth considering, but to be honest at this age I think I'd prefer the iron one. Really old alloy heads can be a bit of a worry.

If it's still got the G60 three-speed you might want to think about ways to fit a four speed in there too, mainly for a lower first gear.

mate has one in his xe. runs the alloy efi head. mild torgue cam. redline torquer manifold and a 350 2 barrel with extractors. its a 5 speed manual and will pull out sideways till redline in 3rd

efi from an xe xf shave the head bout 20 thou 30 thou oversize hypereutectics a 31 73 camtech cam (custom grind)
big valves big springs good collets and full balance you can trick the efi into thinking the air is cold and u can also tension the air flap spring to give it more fuel theres a heap of mods to do if done right u will get about 120 to 140 hp

my 250 in my Cortina is an XD block with an XF alloy head...runs 11.5:1 compression, Hypertec pistons, basically what you could call a towing cam (torquey), 4 bbl manifold with a 650double pumper..still running standard rockers but with upgraded valve springs obviously and made 218 rwhp on its only time on the dyno...

all for the grand total of $1200

the crossflow is a good choice for 4wds as it is a very torquey engine and will last forever as it makes all its power below 4500rpm so you dont have to flog the ring out of it...of course in burnout comps i have spun it to 7000  but it still kept going

So how do these engines compare with a tb42e?

Does the Tb42 benifit as much from similar mods?

I'm sick of changing down on big hills......maybe my GQ is just too heavy.

Similar in capacity, torque etc.

I believe the 4.1 falcon headers actually fit the Nissan TB42 as well.

there was a 4.1 cross flow motor in a land rover at OBC this year that had a turbo on ...it ran really well in the sand. Seamed to be making good HP.

Do you remember which team had the 4.1 crossflow turbo.

Thanks James

If you want a performance 250 and if you are in Qld

There is an XE for sale on car sales that has a worked 250 for about $650

Extractors should be your first mod then maybe a bigger carby

Cant remember the teaam number. But it was on old Cruiser swb. Nice car workerd well except they had the airlines connected to the dizzy etc (which isnt a bad thing). But they had the compressor mounted on the floor. So when they got water into the car they pumped water into the motor, And everything else they pressurised.
(Edit) Whoops they only had an AU 4lt motor.

It was the green landy (The HULK) that had the turbo falcon motor. I thought it was a BA XR6T motor, but could be wrong. It went well. They just had GPS problems and got lost.

It could be my turn to be wrong, but I thought the 4.1 crossflow was the older, pre-EA falcon ford straight six. So if it was a turbo falcon motor from a BA or an AU for that matter, then it wasn't a crossflow.

Not that there's anything wrong with the AU or BA motors, they offer some serious grunt in an increasingly rare straight-six format.

Someone correct me if I am wrong about the crossflow motors.

Good find. The link is: http://carsales.com.au/pls/carsales/!cs ... id=3090104

This happens to be a five-speed too.

It should be possible to get the output shaft of the five-speed machined to slide into the G60 transfer case, replacing the stock G60 three-speed.

Firrst crossflow head motor was an Iron job, 1978. went to alloy about 82.
EA motor is OHC, but still crossflow.

Pretty sure the EA onwards motor has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the earlier motors. ( could be wrong) :? but looks the same in my gregory's W/shop manuals.

Crossflow head - inlet on one side outlet on the other, all crossflow from '79 XC iron head

EA onwards had a different bellhousing

Early five speed from XE won't take abuse and they only put them behind 200ci's not 250ci's,

the hulk's rocker cover was the ally silver colour with the cast round cornered rectangels in it, it also had a slight angle on front.... I'm pretty sure ;) ;)
I think this is the old push rod 4.1L cross flow.....

The newer ford 6's (EA, EB) have lines in the casting running front to back and also have a OHC stamp on them, well from what I can remember.

IMO

Cross hatched cast alloy rocker cover was on EFI XE and XF, the tin hats on all carbed up till XF, EA EB ED had lines cast in the cast alloy cover aswell as OHC, EF on are smooth cast alloy painted blue or red on the tickfords (XR6's) and was bare alloy on the AU non tickford

If you don't take this, I definitely will if the offer's still there - and I can pick it up here in Victoria. My old man drives to Mirboo North every couple of weeks so it would be easy to get him to grab it.

But I am not trying to jump any queues or anything!

Thank you cloughy for the offer I would like to take it off your hands. Are you able to take a picture of it so I know the size and what would it weigh so i can find out how much it would cost to ship to sydney.

Thanks James

Its roughly 300x300x200 and would weigh, mmmmm <5 kilo with 2 shafts, gear and bit, you may require some basic machining for the spigot bearing, as i can't remember exactly whats there will have a look some time on the weekend or early next week, sorry chimpboy

No problem, a G60 being put back into service anywhere is a good thing to see.
