Offset Diffs

Can someone Please explain why Gq's have diffs offset from Front to Rear?? (Front to rhs & rear centre)
I got asked this question @ work today & Had no Answer!! I've never really thought about it other than knowing where they are underneath when I'm out wheeling..

GQ/GU rear diff is centered. This is due to the transmission rear output being centered. The gear reduction part of the transfer case is just another gearbox bolted to the back of the transmission. The part that transfers the drive to the front via a chain, is ofset to one side of the transmission, hence the offset front axle. In MQ's,Landrovers etc, the Transfer case reduction gears are offset to one side of the transmission output--hence offset axles front and rear....

Well actually it is to give clearance from the engine and gearbox for the front drive shaft. Ideally you'd have both front and rear diffs centered ;)
