Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Ok, i'm thinking it'd prolly be easier to find a turbo outta a wrecked newer Rocky than one from my era, so would a 1995 one bolt straight up to an 84 rocky? DL52 is the 95 engine i think, 84 is just DL ? Is there much difference? And my engine was reco-d about 200k ago, reckon i'd be pushing it with turbo? It had the head gasket done in january too.

I'm pretty sure i could find a 1995 TD in a wreckers somewhere, just gotta look, and make sure it will fit

Your motor is a DL-42 Nath.

If you run low boost your motor will handle it fine

It looks as though your oil filter may get in the road of the turbo setup.

If you look at the Rocky manual you downloaded under "Engine Mechanical", on page EM-6 and EM-7 they have outline views of yours and my motor.

You can see that your oil filter is upright, where mine is slanted to clear the turbo.

The fuel pumps look identical except for the boost compensator

Other than this, they look basically the same Nath.. just need to sort out the insurance/engineering viewpoints and you'll be sweet

I beleive you can get better fuel economy, as the motor does not have to work as hard. But, once you get the feel for a turbo you tend to drive a little harder than you normally would Mmmm Boost

I accelerate in the Rocky a lot harder than I should... full boost through to at least 2500rpm in all gears until I reach the speed limit... I know this throws economy out the window, but I dont like being a slow 4x4 driver.. lol... in saying this, i have never dropped below around 450kms to a tank even driving it quite uneconomically.
I'm still used to driving my other car... lol
Although, I am currently testing my mileage driving like a diesel should I'll get back to you on that one

Is there more information of the DL's motor somewhere.
I know the DL42 and DL52 where in the rocky's but what other DL are there?
The DL in my F60 has a different rocker cover than the one in the rocky's. Also I have the Inline injector pump (Bosch PE type) with mechnical and vacuum timing advance (same as the Delta's). Rocky's have a rotary injector pump (Bosch VE type) and have eitehr belt or chain timing drive (my uses gears). Also I have vacuum controlled trottle (delta's have a direct trottle link) which is similar to what Toyota have on their 2H and B series motors.
Does that make mine a DL or a DL32?

P.S. Daihatsu also sold the DL as a stationary motor for gensets and pumps! Most likely a similar configuration to the Delta's and F60/F65 series.

Sweeney, as far as I understand there are two basic types of Daihatsu Diesels. The DG (2.5L) and the DL(2.8L). The DG was used in early Scats.
The DL is the only Diesel you will find under the hood of a rocky.
The DL comes in various forms. From conception to around '87 the DL had a GEAR driven front end. Some early ones used Bosch Inline fuel pumps, but the majority use Denso Rotary (VE) pumps. The first Turbo variations became available around '84 some time and was called the DL-50.

After '87 the front end was changed to timing BELT, the rocker cover changed and the oil pump was moved to the front of the motor. Also the turbo motor used a different turbo (DL-51). Around '93 some time the DL motor was discontinued in Oz and as a result the Rocky Ute was also discontinued. The turbo'd DL continued and was again changed and an intercooler added to lower manifold temps. It was know as the DL-52.
This is as far as they went, right up to '99 or whenever they were discontinued in Oz.

As far as the DL designator goes for the non-turbo motor, I have only ever seen it refered to as "DL" in Daihatsu documentation. I have never heard of "DL-42". I have a genuine Daihatsu engine manual and it covers the non-turbo "DL" motor with timing gear front end. Perhaps the DL-42 refers to the newer motor with timing belt front end.

In regards to your rocker cover, my rocky had an "old-school" looking rocker cover and engine breather out the side cover because it too is timing gear. I bought a newer cover, manifold inlet piece with the breather pipe connection and a blank side cover from the wreckers.
The main difference apart from looks is the engine breaths back into the inlet manifold, rather than straight out next to the sump. The advantage is it stops water/crap getting in the engine during water crossings, etc throu the breather. Well worth the conversion if you can do it. Not sure its possible with the in-line fuel pump as the vacuum connection in the inlet manifold might not allow you to use the VE type manifold inlet piece.

I also saw that the DL motor is still available for gensets. Not many other 4WD's out there can say that they use a stationary engine under the bonnet ehh... Who said rockys wern't a tractor??
