anyone got a detailed pic of one? i wanna make one for my shovel etc but wouldnt even know where to start! thanks in advance

You're looking for a pair of steel rings. One is for the end without the shovel blade, and the other is for the end with the shovel blade.

The one that goes near the shovel blade should be tight enough that you have to unhook it to get the shovel out, and designed so you can put a padlock through it.

Or here's one that doesn't lock, and is even simpler to make:



The screw down part keeps the shovel from moving.

why not just make a pin that goes through the handle at the end so that the shovel doesnt fall out when that bolt rattles loose. It may never happen but if it does you may be in for alot of trouble.

I definatly will be copying that design, if i can ever get around to it.

Yeah... I would also be inclined to angle it down a bit at the handle end so that the weight of the blade tends to keep it in the hoops... just a case of positioning one hoop slightly higher than the others and angling them both a bit...

ok got me new shovel holder ready! thought id put up some pics of it!

Nice work; have you considered putting one on each side, then rotating the shovels 90 degrees so they act like twin spoilers?

You should patent that design. It's heaps better than chimpboy's and my Kaymar one. The problem with bolt screwing into shovel handle is movement on corrugations, bumps, etc. makes you have to keep tightening screw/bolt untill eventually you've worn a hole into shovel handle. It's not long after this that shovel breaks Clamp idea is heaps better.

I'll try to take photo or two of Kaymar type which has shovel and hi-lift holder. Use this to incorporate hi-lift into your idea and you're on a winner for sure.

sorry monkeyman, just meant yours as in your posting

all they are is 2 jocky wheel clamps for a trailer but i had to cut a section out of the part that bolts onto the trailer and spin them around! and the outer bit needs a bit of a love tap with a big hammer to spread it a tad so it fits snug!

My only issue / question is the handles that hold the whole thing tight - If they get bumped by a low branch, they will undo (assuming the vehicle is moving forward of course...) Can anything be done to adjust them so they point down or towards the rear of the vehicle? Couple of washers to pack it out maybe?

Washers or maybe more rubber inside the "O" so that it is already tight half-a-turn earlier?

It's good work, I might do the same to my roofrack. There's something cool about driving around with a shovel on the roof

Here's mine, cable tie a couple of 'quick-fists' from ARB inside the rack and you have an instant shovel holder

I did see a really kewl one where the shovel head pushed into a tight spring loaded holder the shape of the end 3-4inch of shovel head, then as you pushed the spring loaded, the handle moved to enter a closd loop as those above, then a pinchbolt clamped it.

liked it, never seen another like it, was from some 4b place near FTG somewhere

As far as securing familybus' idea, you could drill say a 3mm hole at the end of the clamp handle, run a small length of braided stainless wire through it with an "R" or spring clip on the other end to "secure" the clamp handle to the roof rack frame. Easy.

Or a drop down latch with a hole in the end, peen the clamp handle end flat, put a hole in that, then you could run a small padlock in each.

yes i have! i had to use it to bury one of my pet cats and im about to have to use it to bury another one im about to loose!
