Whats involved in using a GTI bottom end but retaining the stock 1.3 head, etc. As in everythings still the same, but the bottom end is the stronger GTI unit. I've heard this being done before but not in great detail. Can anyone help me with some info on this topic? Cheers.

You need to swap the pistons to 8v ones (maybe invest in high compression ones), the pulley is a multi-groove type so you would need to include all the external bits (alternator etc) or swap it over for a vitara single v (sierra cranks have 4 bolt, gti have 5 bolts, you have to make sure you where getting the same amount of teeth for the timing belt) Don't forget to add the fan on the new motor.

It almost be like a complete rebuild with all the parts swapping needed to be done

Still might be worth it to increase the redline by 1000pts (providing the top end could handle it and the carby didn't lean out)

Santos. can you do a gti top end onto a g16b bottom end easily at all?

lol, Nic you've been around as long as i have. :D
(ok so i'm a little more obsesive with suzuki's in general)

The answer is 'not worth the hassle' , the Swifter have actually proven that a g16 outflows the DOHC head, so by doing it youre only starving the oxygen.

On top of the usual hassles of both the g16 into a sierra (engine mounts, gearbox etc) and the gti head (dizzy, themostat)

you are trading forged internals (which redline at like 8600rpm JDM) for cast ones (6000rpm? to be safe)

If you got a g16b you might as well just get a custom cam made for torque, HP and economy with a re-programed chip.(the oem one probably is quite conservitive since it has to comply to an extra factor -emissions)

I'm certain it would be less head ache, easier to maintain.

(Then again if you live in the W of A wouldn't you be better of blueprinting a g13 block to keep it legal-looking?)

Cheers fellas. Geez, thought it would be more simple than that, sounds like a hand full. Oh well, more info for my Suzuki folder. I'll think about it all when I get some money. Cheers.
