GQ gearbox groan

Post by BrettInUte »

my 97/98 GQ 4.2 diesel ute is starting to have a large groan/vibration when under load.

when I first got the ute - it used to make the noise a little - but its now getting worse.

Its only when running low revs (under 2000rpm) - under load only
Mainly in the lower gears.
It stops if you push the clutch in.
It only happens while actually driving.
Its happening in 2wd and 4wd
My driveshafts and unis are in great nick.

Note - when I got the ute - the gearbox had a bit of water in it. Done 75000 kms since then. I have been doing a bit of heavy towing lately.

Any thoughts ??

is it gear chatter or a graon, it's hard to hear from here.

Is it at low revs? Does it go away if you give it some throttle or put your foot ont he clutch?

yep ONLY at low revs under load (initial takeoff or uphill etc)
disappears as you move thru the rev range.
disappears as soon as you put your foot on the clutch

was hearing it heaps while spotlighting - doing about 20kph in 2nd gear

and Im sure its getting worse.

usually referred to as gear box chatter, part of the luxury of driving a GQ :D and some GU diesels.

Mine does it , don't know how to cure it myself, I just put up with it.

Anyone know how to cure it or why it occurs?
