WHICH INTERCOOLER

I have td42 with an AXT turbo and i am looking at intercooling it, now what i want find out is which intercooler to use air to air or water to air, and which brand is the most efficent and consistant, any advice eill be good.

www.are.com.au has some good info on their site.
personally i think its a case of $$$ and what type of driving you do mostly. water-air would be better for 4x4 but it costs more. air-air is better for highway driving.

Heaps of threads on this but a water to air is a much better option though a bit more complex to set up. You could go a barrel cooler or a dedicated core like the one from ARE.
Much more surface area then a barrel but not sure on the price. An air to air would be cheaper as you can pick up ricer intercoolers for $350, or second hand ones from the wreckers off WRX, RX7's ect.

I have one for sale at the moment.
Front mount, originally from a toyota supra
fits in patrol with virtuallly no cutting, good for up to 200rwkw
only want 100 bucks
Used this same cooler in my RB30 GQ patrol turbo.

Air to air Front mount for me. Mainly wanted it for the open road, off road its all pretty slow low rev stuff I do.
I got a new 600 X 300 X 75 Bar and plate off ebay for $200. Fits infont of the condensor neatly with a litle chopping of the grill.
I don't do big mud holes so no worries about clogging it up and if I do a big tourig trip I would probably carry the originl cross over pipe incase it got holed.
Top mount unless its water cooled is pretty much useless for slow work.

I have the same setup - was talking to a bloke at Hi-Tech radiators who said he could do a top mount for me for a reasonable price.
Would need to install a scoop in the bonnet though ...

my suggestion is a cheap bar and plate, hey seem to be a good cheap option, work well on the trucks I have seen them on, my GU had a big safari front mount that I was very happy with, I am always worried about the air to water, the whole concept of adding any chance for water to get into a diesel worries me, but those who do these fro a living tell me my fears are unwarranted, go for what you feel comfortable with
