Winch Shorting

After hearing of others who have had people tamper with their winch and use it to destroy their vehicle, I decided I'd better find out how to avoid this. Can the motor be powered by shorting out any of the 3 terminals (on the winch motor) to ground or each other? If so what do I do to fix the potential problem? Should I install an isolator just incase?

take off the solenoid cover and find the thin wire that goes to the plug from the large main active wire.
cut this wire and run two wires into the cab to a switch, connect these two wires to the ends of the cut wire and the job is done.
to use winch you have to turn this switch on.

This would be safer wouldnt it?
Mate has now mounted his controller box in the engine bay, out of sight and out of mind, mud crap etc.. Looks cleaner too!
Runs a switch off his dash to control the unit.

Or you could simply unbolt the heavy winch lead to the battery terminal when not in use.(in public)
I instaled a switch from the remote wiring, hate the thought of not having something.
