Sumitomo tryes

Hi Guys,

Was looking at getting some sumitomo muds and just after perople opinions and experiences with these tyres.

They are 31's.

What are they like on road, in wet, what is the wear like etc.

Your help is appreciated.

Zam i had a set of 31s.. found them to be great in the mud.. and in wet on road awsome.. but usin them on the road more then in the bush did seem to wear them quickly.. but besides that.. i am thinkin of getting them again.. only reason for sealin them were becoz had no front diff and havnt been off road in over a yr..

Are they sarenghetis (?)?? My mates got them (30", or 29" IIRC)and they luv the mud, haven't seen them on rocks yet. How much are they asking for 31"s?? He paid about 150 for his.

Yeah they are the serengeti SL840 31x10.5x15

Price is $165 but might even be able to get them a little cheaper.

If you are interested, you can get Simex M/T Centipedes for about the same bux. Tread pattern similar to Wrangler MT/R.

serengeti muds 31.10.5x15

are very good tyre my old man runn a set on the old ford raider and pritty much got him through everything
but they are a very sofe compound like the kumho muds and will wear fairly fast

joint in melb sells them $150 to $169

I run the Serengeti muds 31 10.5 x 15 on my Disco. Very happy with them offroad but they are crap on bitumen ( as expected, noisy & pricks to balance ) compared to the BFG A/Ts we used to run.


Paid $ 165 each last year, they are wearing ok but they dont do much bitumen as they are only our play tyres.

Thanks guys for your help.

I guess the general opinion is that they are a good tyre off road and some people think OK on road but they do wear quicker.

So for a cheap tyre, that being $100 cheaper than bfg muds, they are quite a good option.

Even at the same price as BFG muds they're probably still a good option. Can't be any more likely to pop a sidewall.....

Not sure what your saying Beastmavster... BFG's 30" approx $240 ... Mates had the Sumito's seringeti's (Ithink thats how they splell itt) they were sold to him as 30" (bullshit artists in Geelong). He's had to replace one because of a stake in the tyre trick so what is turned out to be "good tyres" have turned out more expensive. Now the BFG's I had done only 5000 k's on them no sign of wear and tear and not been staked yet (it will happen today) And I have been down some choice tracks......you know the too many sticks in a puddle trick.... My pet hate is some tool has tool fill the bog hole with sticks

Oh forgot to mention although the Sumitos a slightly smaller the beast still gets out of mud bogs and other choice crap holes (the driver is as mad as a meat axe)

A lot of tyres are undersize.... for instance most 31" tyres only just scrape over 30". You get used to that. Whats the actual nominal size on the tyre? 30" If so it'll be just over 29"... 235/75/15? That'll be just under 29".

Bad news is the new BFG's have a great reputation for being staked. Just because you've been lucky doesnt mean that they're actually that good.

Check the outback tyres thread about it - where BFG MT's used to be a touring tyre of choice these days they're pretty unpopular for it.

I was out with a bloke on the weekend that had Sumitomos on his Disco and he got down the steep parts of Fultons Track in heavy drizzle without any problems. They certainly looked the goods offroad.

Sounds like something stuck either in the bead or maybe the valve.

I've had a tyre on road drop a lot of pressure real quick due to a bead partially unseating after a whack or some sudden braking or hard cornering...

Hen pumped back up all was good again.

The other possibility can be that there was a little dirt in a bead or something like that, and when pumped up it blew out and resealed properly.


This stuff happens to confound us.


Now if someone can explain my occasional battery flats I'd be most appreciative :D

Hey Beastmavster,

Although I am not an autoelec and far from it but my missus has a mazda astina and if you dont drive it or start for about 3 days the battery goes flat we have just got a heavy duty battery for it and the problem is still there although the battery does last longer before going flat.

The problem is most likely some sort of power drain, in my missus car she has an alarm and sat tracking whihc is not connected but is still draining the power some how the auto elec reckons the whole thing has to be ripped out and will cost about $800.

But if you take it to an auto elec they should be able to help you out, also could be a loose wire on the alternator so sometimes it is not charging the battery when driving and therefore goes flat over time but occassionally you might hit a bump or whatever and the wire connects and starts charging the battery.

Could be something to look at.

Same symptoms with the zook new battery still went flat leaky diode in alternator full rebuild no prob any more check N*A*M*S write up in the auto elec section http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... hp?t=11788
I hate when auto electricians cant be precise or do a simple test to see if its alt or starter motor etc....
