300Tdi Timing Belt Change

Post by SteveC »

Can anyone offer any experience on changing the timing belt on the 300Tdi?
I have just purchased a 96 Disco with only 130,000 kms on it. Checked with the previous Land Rover service centre that looked after it and they have lost all records prior to 2004 so they cannot tell me if it has been changed.
Is there a way to tell if it has been changed, if not I am going to change anyway.
I did try a search, but nothing specific on this subject.
Thanks

The nut for the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer can be very hard to remove. And they have to be tighten very tight (to the manual) as well (or the keyway and front of the crankshaft can flog out). I use a long length of pipe on a strong breaker bar.

Special tools include
Alignment pins for the flywheel and the injection pump pulley - needed to get the injection pump timing correct.

Dial type torque wrench, to adjust the tensioner pulley for the timing belt. Rover issued a service bulletin, reducing the torque given for the tensioner - to reduce the load on the injection pump shaft. I don't have a copy and lost the hard drive that I saved the info on. You can't use a normal torque wrench, and dial type wrenches are very expen$$ive.

Have you confirmed that the updated pulley etc. have been fitted (to overcome premature failure of the belt? If not fitted, you should fit them when changing the belt.

Which leads to another question:

Has anyone fitted Zeus timing gears? I know there's a Defender running around with hate messages all over it, but is there any other feedback on them?

If you look on the UK forums, there is not many good words for them, drawback is they need to be lubricated and the cover needs to be sealed fully to allow this, a belt every 80k is easy to live with.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
