'86 vs '89 RR

I am looking for another Rangie to start a new project. I will use the axles/diifs out of mine and the 4.6 motor.

I was looking to get as late a model as I could, like an 89/90 model but people are still asking some high prices for these so I might have to set my sights a bit lower.

Just wondering if anyone know what changes there were between these years. I think they all should have the 3.5 motor but was there any change to the auto?

89 the tcase went to viscous (no good)
late 89 the motor went to 3.9 (good, but had viscous tcase)

You should be able to get 89 model rangies for around 4000... is this more then your looking to spend???

I was lookign around the $3k. I plan to Chop it, build a tray but also take my time on this one, taking right back to Chasis and building it up.

So there were no cosmetic changes or changes to the dash or steering?

It sounds like I might as well go for the earlier model. I will get the auto and T/C fully rebuilt anyway as I will have to try to get the ZF built to take the pounding from the 4.6.

the early ZF's had small cooler lines so u would need to upgrade them as well. A 4.6 on carbies wont kill a ZF that is well cooled and looked after.

i have killed two ZFs running behind tired 3.5s... Abit of extra cooling should make up for the 4.6 but you can still kill em.

Yep I've destroyed one had a injected 4.6 infont had to do some major work to it now it seems to be ok but its still winter and giving it a flogging I can get the temp up to 60-70dec c

What are you blokes doing to kill ZF's? You either don't service them or you flog the living shit out of them. Nothing is meant to be flogged to death (I'm a bloke of reasonable experience :? )

Well serviced ZF's will get a good life of 300K. They're a great 'box and much better than any 5 speed manual that LR ever made

Any Rangie pre-viscous is my pick, getting a good one is another thing. The 91's with the 3.9 with the hotwire EFI system, no ABS, EAS, etc.. are probably the choice Rangie and worth considering, but still will fetch $6K or so. The VC can be converted back to the LT230 easi8ly enough.

Good luck with it.

If you just going to chop it, rebuild and redo everything.. best to get the cheapest 86 you can find.. pointless looking for something with pretty panels if they just going to be chopped and bashed

Rebuild the ZF with stronger everything, LT with lower gearing.. and you will be laughing..

Alternatively.. you could buy an 84/85 4dr with 3sp auto as it has Lt230 as well.. and just fit your ZF inplace of the 3spd..
