Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hey there guys and girls,

just thoguht id put this up here as its now 99% finished and im pretty happy with and thought that some of those who dont read all of the sections might benefit from this,

basically, i bought a 60L Waeco, wanted it on a slide out the back of the car, but didnt want to pay $300+ for it, and so iv ended up with this after about 2 half days of work, and about $140 later, im pretty happy

we used the same sort of rails in my olds truck the first time, they lasted about 2 months and had lost all the little bearings after that

not to worry i bought the rails for $20 and bought them on the understanding that although rated to 60kg, they may not quite be up to the task and have already sourced heavier duty ones in case these fail, no big loss if they do

Looks like a good job, well done.
The runners would be rated to 25-30kgs.
The stronger ones from Hafele are about $120 a pair and are rated to 100kgs.

They should last a while, and if they go, just up grade. You'll have to trim the base little as the 100kg runners are a bit wider

thanks mate, yeh possibly only rated to that, though the fridge alone is 22kg.... theyre about 9mm wide and 55mm high, the brand is something like "reponi" theyre more than 25-30kgs im pretty sure, but if they fail im going to set it up on skateboard bearings anyways as iv got them sitting in my old box of skating crap they hold over 100kg each, ill sort something out,

That's what I used on my drawer systems. Have never had them fail yet.

yeh theyre strong little buggers, and 8mm centres makes life easy

It's not excactly a fridge slider, I turned the whole tray for the Hummer into a slider using the tailgate as the front, I used 35mm bearings top and bottom inside a 50mm C channel just need to put a ply floor in and cover it.

Looks great. I made something similar for mine, but using crap sliders that fell apart

Couple of questions (based on my failures):

First, how did you mount it into your vehicle ie. what holds it down in the event of an accident / rollover?

Secondly, what is the panel on top for (7th photo I think)? If it's for the back, you may have overheating issues, as I did. I was surprised by how much heat they generate and found that I didn't have enough breathing holes so the whole box got hot and reduced the efficency of the fridge.

Lastly, how do you stop the fridge from sliding whilst the vehicle is in motion? Do the slides have some type of locking mechanism, or is there another lock that I just can't see?

yeh its not properly mounted there, i held it down with just a cam buckle strap, but ill pick up some of the tie down points in the rear of my car to mount it to, there 6 x 10mm bolts all up, a 10mm bolt holds what??? 2 tonne or something, im pretty sure it wont go anywhere...

ill definitely need to sort out something for heat, worst comes to worst i can take the back of anyway, but ill cut some sort of panels for the exhaust heat,

and i havent yet completed the locking mechanism, as it is, if the fridge is in the only thing stopping it is the back door, but i have a few barrel locks that i might setup, but either way one or two pins that lock the slide to the base some how will do the job nicely

The slides look like the same slides used to hold rack servers in.

just thought id put it up,

it took me ages but i finally worked out a pin to lock the slide into place

1/4" x 3" bolts

My 100kg hafele drawer runners were delivered today for $99.95 inc post! Nice solid looking units, 3 1800x1200x17 sheets of formply and a pile of screws later I should have some nice shelves/drawers/fridge slide! Pics to come!
