Outer Limits 4x4 Board

as the name suggests, i have a bonnet scoop that i want to mount on my car, but i have no idea how to go about it, i would like to hear from anyone that has done it. cheers

use cardboard to make a template of the hole you'll need to cut. Open your bonnet and have a look underneath and see where it will fit best keeping in mind the bracing on your bonnet. Once you've done that then just cut the hole and mount the scoop. It depends on the type of scoop when it comes to attatching it to the bonnet. Should become fairly obvious when you go to fit it up

if you are not cutting a hole for air to go through and its purely cosmetic

I would sikaflex it on and also attatch it with 4 self tapping screws.

You could get away without the screws but youd need to rough up the paint a tad where the sikaflex is goiung, or at the very least ensure theres no wax there, and give the sikaflex a good 2-3 days to cure.

sikaflex and pop rivets? Sikaflex and screw? best way to do it in my opinon.

They're usual made of fiberglass or plastic ain't they?

yea, its a fibreglass scoop

I'd use URATHANE instead of sikaflex....... sure it costs more but its twice as strong, out lasts sikaflex considerably, and its not as easilly effected by heat ( engine heat will soften the sikaflex )

Heres a thread I did on the 4wd monthly forum about the Patrol Bonnet Scoop install on my 4Runner.

If its a glass scoop, then back to bare metal around where the lip of the scoop is, then use some sort of adhesive as mentioned above, and temp fix it with self tappers. After adhesive has set, remove self tappers, and glass the scoop to the bonnet, then respray.

I reckon the Patrol Scoops are one of the best scoops to fit to Lux's....they look great and as mentioned above is what I have fitted to my 4runner....If you wanted to keep it Toyota you could probably fit one of the new Lux's as they look indentical to the Nissan Scoops.....but not sure want kinda $$$ they go for.....the Nissans ones can be had for as little as $110

I had xr6 scoops on my 94lux they looked like they were factory.
(the three hole ones) they popped off when I rolled it lotsa times

I was getting followed by a Terracan earlier this morn and was lookin at the scoop thinking "That might look OK on the runner, and not as common as the Pootroll one"....

So yeah....

I am considering a Torana scoop for my surf, after the V8 goes in.

BAckwards facing it will be a real heat mover.

I'm told a rear facing scoop, while being better for heat dispersion, is not allowed in ADR rules as any fluids released will be chanelled directly onto the windscreen potentially causing an accident due to loss of vision.

I reviewed the modifications bookklet the Dept. Transport puts out asnd it doesn't say anything like that.

Just restrictions on size, etc.

Besides, they're not rare.

I went to a company called Nu Gen, who do the body work styling etc for the doof doof cars you see around.
They'll put a Series One WRX Scoop across the bonnet, and two rearfacing flush mounted vents for heat extraction onto my GQ Hi-Roof Patrol, and colour match the whole thing to the bonnet.
Not cheap, but sure should make it look mean.

I had also been told about the rear facing opening rule. But the rules on the Vic Roads site don't say anything about it and diagrams alos show a rear facing opening as being OK.

Not yet, but will as soon as it's done. Hoping to use the tax-return for it. It was $660 but that was due to the fact that the GQ has a double crease down the bonnet that they had to modify the scoop to mould around.

Scott (Venom Cobra) is selling me a cobra fibreglass scoop that I can mount rear facing. He says it is not a problem, legally, and he does alot of mods and is kind of in the know.

For mounting, he suggests getting it painted first, cutting the hole, using sikaflex to attach, cleaning up the sikaflex and good as gold.

i have series 1 wrx scoop on my mq.

will look the goods once its all painted and fitted.

Hey all, thanks for you ideas, its been a great help, il let you all know how it goes when i fit it,.. im thinkin i will take BundyRumandCoke's idea of rubbing back, mounting and then glassing it in...make it look really nice and pro... but il keep you all posted, il be starting a members thread soon of the build up... keep your eyes open
