i wouldnt imagine there would be all that many with massive amounts of kms to be able to tell how good they realy are. They have only been around for 3 years or so, most are probably only shopping trollys

Probably the only guide is to look at how the 4.2s and 4.5s are doing with high kms... generally speaking, 230,000km is not particularly high for them if they've been looked after.

As far as being thirsty... you need to take how thirsty you think it will be, and then double it. It will be really thirsty. You won't believe how thirsty it is.

I wouldn't hesitate to put one on gas, personally. Worst case you have to get the head done later, and when you do you get it fully fixed up for LPG. But you might be just fine without doing anything to the head.

I have just fitted LPG in my 4.8, and I LOVE IT!!!!! Since fitting it, I noticed a little flat spot on take off, i also had a few little probs one includes stalling 10-20secs at idle just after starting... BUT, I took the car back to the gas fitter for repair and ALL IS friggen brilliant..
He fixed the flat spot, it dosent stall, i goes heaps harder, and is still unbelievable on gas...

305km per 85ltr, the 1st one was 310km off 88ltr, this cost me WAIT for it, $45.00 to fill....
I am over the MOON.... I love the LPG, You would not regret fitting this system up...

I think they can even fit injected gas up to em now, they are spose to get better power and also better eccon, BUT for the extra 1k, I diddnt bother...

230k is probly bugger all as really they are the same motor as the 4.5, only head has changed, and of course the bore and stroke is different.. but im sure they are very similar....

You should also get a real good deal currently on any big petrol guzzler, the dealers are struggling to sell them as the price of fuel is going up... You should try and get LPG thrown in with the price of the car on the lot (unless its private)
Head straight to Sydney and go through the car yards, I paid 29k for 4.8ltr screamer with only 95k on the clock, mine was in Wagga Wagga but.. its like a hamburger with THE LOT....

If you are worried about the head and valves, why dont you fit a valve saver lube, fits up in minutes, could save a lot of cash.. I will fit one of these things...

YOU WILL LOVE THE POWER OF 4.8ltr... They friggen HAMMER...

OHH, just to note, I had ran out of LPG on the weekend and I had used the petrol for around 50km, LOL, I used about 15lts of petrol, to come from just out of town around 17km and back out of town back to were we came from.. I could litterly see the gauge drop as I drove up a hill, lol.. There BAD new on juice man, lol... Ohh but crist it hammers on petrol...180kw at your right boot, awesome.....

Can only speek of what i have, a TB42 same family as the 4.8. They were originally designed for forklift engines, with gas in mind. Im on gas and i replaced the cylinder head at 240,000. I think its more to do with the alloy hardening over time, expanding and contracting. Didnt bother me all that much coz 240,000 hassle free kms isnt bad anyway. I havent heard of many GU onward having such common head probs. BUT gas is cetainly helping my bank account.
