Rear diff woes

:bad-words: :x

Got whining noise coming from the rear diff, on deceleration right through all gears, and on accleleration (lowish revs) on 4th and 5th. Also has a bit of 'knocking' to it

After a bit of searching found this:
"generally if you get a wine on decell it is your rear diff pinion bearings."
Tru or not? And how much $$ am i roughlty lookin at? Will throwing thicker oil in it prolong it, and can I drive around in 4WD with the rear shaft out? Or will this bugger something else up?

sounds serious. Not wheel bearings then?? Check them first, though sounds like a diff issue. Exchange reco'd replacements are unsually 500 dollar up wards depending on type, Best to fix now before it self destructs and causes more serious grief.

If sumone fits them and engineer's them for free, and the seller can accept 5x $500 payments over the next 6 months... sure
