GQ Automatic early change problem

Post by mortaygo »

Does anyone know if there is a fix for the overdrive coming in too early. I understand the VL Commodores had the same problem. I feel that with the power button depressed, it is revving too hard over 70ks, however over drive kicks in at 60 so it keeps dropping back and forth. I have never owned an Auto so it is a bit annoying. I am hoping there is some sort of sensor or something that can be changed or upgraded. :?:

yeah mine does the same, and at about 90kms, its drops into overdrive, pain in the arse at times, not sure what you can do about it, my gear box was rebuilt and i asked them if they could change it, no and they get alot of requests to do so, maybe some where does it,

mine did the same thing... dropped into overdrive at 90kph.... wouldn't drop out until it got to about 80kph... if i put my foot down trying to dissengage it, it would drop back to 3rd gear. It's a PITA.... when i did the V8 conversion, i made the overdrive manual... so i engage it when i want, and dissengage it likewise. Gives me no problem, and i can still drive it in 3rd and 4th with the torque converter locked without any dramas.

How did you make the overdrive manual, that would be perfect if you could lock it out..

you tap into cable number 3 on your trans ECM.... it's a green wire, top plug, 3rd wire down..... just make sure you have the right one. I can check mine, but i'm sure thats the one. On the GQ it will lock in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th..... the GU will lock in all gears. I still drive mine locked up hills and it changes back to 3rd if you accelerate, works fine, and works at lower revs. Haven't used it off road yet, no use to me if it won't lock in 1st gear. When i get the GU shift body i might :D Make sure you put an inline fuse on it, 10 amp i think i put on mine.

Perfect Patrolden, I will try this, as long as I can lock out the OD (4th) but still automatically pick up what feels like the half gear between the change form third to OD.... where did you fit your switch, on the t bar or on the dash?

i mounted mine on the dash next to the radio. A guy from the Patrol forum made a setup that was automatic in the sense that you engaged it, and it stayed that way until you either hit the switch again, or touched the brakes..... works great in a GU, will work in a GQ also.... just not in 1st.

I'll be contacting those guys to get one for mine once the turbo goes on it. But generally, initially all you need to do is adjust the TPS a bit more, it's a pain because it can sometimes change back gears when you don't want it to, but it ramps the pressure up in the trans and stops slipping and weird assed gear changes. Certainly worked on mine, although the shift body ups the pressure internally so you don't need to put the TPS so far advanced. From what i hear, ones those guys are selling are great.

What do you mean by adjusting the TPS? I am guessing that is the Throttle position sensor, how do you do that, I am going to put a switch on the dash so I can lock it third gear, but then you mention the TPS..... i am a bit confused now

there is a sensor hooked up to your carby/throttle body that tells the gearbox how much throttle you are using.... it boosts pressure inside the gear box and holds the gears a little longer, puts more pressure on your clutch packs as well (thats my understanding of it) It's a good part of the reason why a lot of people burn out the auto trans when doing a V8 conversion. It doesn't have enough internal pressure in the gearbox due to the TPS being wrongly set and the clutches slip causing the gearbox to overheat. I nearly had the same thing happen to mine... the overtemp warning light came on probably half a dozen times, and i kept blowing off the cooling lines. It did the same thing thats been described in this thread.... changing through gears sluggishly and quickly..... and when cornering it wouldn't change back. Luckily for me, i got it serviced and the guy set it properly.... it's been working great since!! although, he did warn me that i had damaged the gearbox, and he couldn't guarantee how long it would work. So far it's been great!! Don't know how it will travel when i put a turbo on the V8... time will tell.

I cut the green and orange(more like brown) wire and added a switch, however nothing happened when switched on... do you think you could confirm which wire you tapped into and confirm if you cut it completely or just stripped back the insulation and added a wire to which you ran a toggle switch... I am not much good at this stuff.... as you can tell

you need to hook up a 12 volt supply to it... not to the ECU side thought.... just to the G/B side. Make sure it is fused as well. And you will need to cut the wire completely. Just do it far enough away from the ECU so that if you need to you can reconnect it

i'm pretty sure the ECU is the same, because i used the wiring diagram from a GU to find the torque converter lock up wire on my GQ. It won't work in 1st because of the diferrence in the main shift body. The GU one also has a "hold" function.... which would be very handy

The late model GQ's can lock in 1st gear as well. ie 92 on. The valve body is different. I've done a full manual conversion on my auto. Ultimately a manual valve body from Wholesale auto's will be happening but by adding a few relays, diodes and a 5v power supply it is working really well. I can now put it into whatever gear I want and it will stay there. It is a lot faster too, now that I have complete control of gear change revs. On take off I rev it to 3500 then change gear without lifting off, it then hits second etc etc. It definitely works as at the last comp I was doing similar times on the speed sections, to manual Patrols with a lot more power. Now lets see how it goes with a VH45.
93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)
