High Or Low Mount

im gonna buy a winch real soon and wanna know which is better high or low
i had a low 8000lbs but it was too fuggin slow
i have calculated that i need a 9100lbs winch for my 60
but other big cars run high mounts with no probs
im tossing up between a high mount or a 10000lbs low mount
evryone seems to be using high mounts
is this because they are very good or becoz they r just the cool thing to have ?(no offence to those with em)

my main use will be for recovering my self from bog holes ruts
the 60 is not a touring car but just a bush bashing car for the w/end
any info would be greatly appreciated

we used to run a highmount warn on our old 60 , pulled it outa bog holes etc no probs and pretty quick aswell, pity we left it on the 60 when we sold it

the other thing you need to consider is will your current bullbar fit a highmount or will you need to buy a new bar to fit the highmount ?

Hi-mount is THE winch. The design concept is much more efficient and robust than the planetary. The worm gear design is as strong, however slow. The Hi-mount is THE winch if you can afford the weight (no problems if you replace the cable and roller) and the size (who is NOT cutting these days?).

Ive just taken a low mount 9000 lb off and put on a high mount
the high mount is ship loads faster

high mounts will allow you to use plasma rope without cooking the reel.

HIGH MOUNT!

What i have seen is that a High Mount can Pull just as hard as a Low mount but it can do it a lot quicker!!!!

I went himount because:
1. Faster lin speed means you can drive & winch with less chance of over running the winch.
2. Lower operating temp with the external brake means I could run plasma rope - although I'm not....
3. Simple to work on & service.
4. Holds more line. (if you choose).
5. can be easily mods for water proofing, upgraded to higher motors and voltage fairly easily etc....Heck I even like the idea of a phunmatic ly operated spool lever that Snake Racing have etc...
6. Proven reliebility...Look at comp rigs - nearly every one of 'em has a Himount - speaks volumes IMHO.....also you'll see many OLD winch's that still keep on chugging.....
7. I loves the cool clicking sounds when it's operating

Does the high mount use more power than the low mount ?

The ammount of current drawn will depend on the weight you are pulling and how hard the motor is working.

yeh i thought this was just coz it was cool and it was a phase to have a hi mount but now my mind has changed

LOL not many true comp rigs will bolt sheet on that isn't the real deal.....
BTW another example - LightForce spotties......

From the Warn Website....

XD9000
12V DC PERFORMANCE SPECS

Lbs.(Kgs.) Line Speed Motor Current Pull by layer
FT./min(M/min.) layer/Lbs(Kgs.)

0 38(11.6) 70 amps 1/9000(4082)
2000(910) 14.4(4.39) 180 amps 2/8190(3715)
4000(1810) 11(3.35) 255 amps 3/7500(3402)
6000(2720) 8.67(2.64) 330 amps 4/7010(3180)
8000(3630) 6.88(2.10) 415 amps
9000(4080) 6.38(1.94) 460 amps

M8274-50 Highmount
12V DC PERFORMANCE SPECS
Lbs.(Kgs.) Line Speed Motor Current Pull by layer
FT./min(M/min.) layer/Lbs(Kgs.)

0 73.4(22.4) 55 amps 1/8000(3629)
2000(910) 22(6.71) 190 amps 2/7460(3384)
4000(1810) 12(3.66) 275 amps 3/6980(3166)
6000(2720) 9.50(2.90) 350 amps 4/6620(3003)
8000(3630) 6.10(1.86) 450 amps 5/6290(2853)

So if you look at these figures you will notice that at 8000lb..ie. full load on a highmount, the XD9000 ,chosen because most probably most popular low mount, actually has a faster line speed... granted under light load, i.e 2000lb or less, the highmount is nearly twice as fast, but once it is under a decent load, is less then 1 metre a minute quicker.. that is not alot..

I choose the low mount, for it's pulling power, ability to be mounted "stealthly" and a cheaper purchase price ....

landy_man said,

Quote,
"2000lb or less, the highmount is nearly twice as fast" (as the XD9000)
Unquote.

And interestingly for those of us with light cars, the M6000 is faster across the board than the XD9000 and and only slower than a high mount in a no load situation.
Not big enough for Bundytuna's 60, but plenty for a zook

I have a 10k low mount, it works fine, pulls the loaded to the shithouse GQ fine.

If speed is an issue, go the Highmount.. IF you dont really give a fuck how long it takes, as long as your out of the bog, Low mount is easily as good... Even the blokes at ARB said that. I got my 10k second hand out of trading post for a good price. Hardly used.

Theres a second hand Highmount in forsale section.

I'd go with the HS9500.
It is rated a bit for more weight than a High Mount and has just about the same performance speed-wise.
