I want to buy a gps to use as a speedo and general locating oneself etc. I wouldnt be buying one if it were not for the need of speedo though. I was looking at getting a cheapy the issue with this is that they all seem to run off AA batteries with a life of about 18 hours. for me changeing batteries that often would be a pain and I was hoping that there would be something out there that I could wire up the the battery without costing what the in car nav systems do.

The Main complaint for me from my Explorist 600 is that it cant use AA battery's. when hikeing and the like rechargeable's suck. if its for a car only then go rechargeable.

if you dont really want it for mapping find on that is rechargeable and buy online from the use you will generally save about 40% on the price here. make sure it comes with a car charger. i would look at something like the Explorist 400 or something similar from the USA.

hmm just googles them, they are a bit more then I was wanting to spend. but they do look good. Im guessing for less they dont come with mapping capability?

Check out the Garmin Extrex yellow. You should be able to get one for about $180, and $30 will buy you a 12 cable so you don't need batteries.

If you want something a bit more compact, the Garmin Geko 201 is pretty much the same unit, just smaller. It's got a smaller screen though, which is harder to read.
The cheap ones won't have mapping capabillity.

Be careful the geko needs a 3v adapter for the data cable supply. 12v will fark it.

add in say 20 for shipping and thats a bargin. search round i got my explorist 600 for 400 aud when they were new online from the states and got the 50 mail in rebate from magellan then bought discover aus topo maps and for round 800 i had an awsome gps that would have cost 1300 to buy here.

I would check legalitys on that, from what i understand you cant use them since they can drop out ocasionaly

I have a Garmin Etrex Summit.

It runs on AA batteries, or can be used with the in car cable.

It will measure ground speed, plus elevation data, including rates of ascent and descent (it maps this data as well). You can set all the way points, and create a waypoint. Also includes a compass.

It was about $240.

are they still that much? i got mine from USA in 2002 for $80usd. might be a better option to buy one online and have it sent over.
or just get one of ebay if its cheap enough

I have a Uniden 105GPS UHF radio with built in GPS. It will also acts as a speedo. Very accurate. I have it dash mounted in a pod and it is very easy to read the dial from there.

RN ive Always liked that idea, how does it work? very acurate. can you get it to show lat and lon on screen?

It is a basic gps built in so as you are driving you observe your speed, you set it as a speed alert and it will record your fastest speed obtained.

As for accuracy I think it is very good. My speedo at 100 reads about 99 on the gps and about 101kph on some of the overhead speed gantries on the highway..so I am quite satisfied. Plus being an expert I know when someone is speeding....

That said, it has fields like my position which will give you the lat long..

have heard of people regoeing enduro bikes with gps as speedo in qld, dont know if the inspecto rknew of it being a digital speedo or a gps

yea I saw these. I do need a new uhf as well. Ive heard that they arnt the best. how did you mount it on the dash? My theory is that once I have it I wont need to be looking at it all the time as I still have my speedo which tells me if my speed is altering. just need to check what speed Im doing from time time when speed limits change etc.

any other good/bad reports on thse things.

hey buddy i run the uniden UHF GPS its a great unit i use the speedo when i have my 36's on it tells your speed had a little digital compass on the screen as well, tells you average speed, you can set the trip computer to distance traveled and max speed, it also has a blackspot, speed camera and red light camera detector built in thats also handy.

try prestige communications they are very cheep and delivered mine to my door the day after i payed for it very good.

I haven't replaced my speedo I have the GPS to compare. I got a pod from Dept of the Interior and it sits on the dash above theheater vents, It is very central and I can have easy access to the radio and read the dials without looking down. Just a quick glance to the left and then back to the front.

the radio is not bad and it receives very well. Transmitting power is OK but not as good as the GME or Icom, but that doesn't worry me.

If your after a dead cheap option, adapt a push bike speedo to your car. Very cheap and have heaps of features such as odo, ave speed, max speed, trip time, trip distance. Only problem is the backlight does not stay on.
