Can anyone tell me how to i.d a chev smallblock to tell its displacement? And i.d ing the heads to tell what they are?
It has 010 at the end of the cast number, the 3 middle caps are 4 bolt, 2 outer are 2 bolt. Sumps off if this helps.

What you have is generaly a 350 4 bolt block
The 010 block was also in the 302 and 327 engines

Ive got a 350 2bolt 010 in my hq.
Its stripped down to a block and pistons so let me know if you need numbers etc off it.

Block 3970010
Heads 3998991 - 1969 307 chev
GM67
Crank 3932442 - 1969-85 505 or 350 chev
GM35
Block 3970010 - 1969-79 350 chev heavy duty

the above info came from "chevrolet small block ID guide"
in my opinion the heads are nothing special, someone has removed the 350 heads (which judging from the 4 bolt mains probably were LT1 or similar) and replaced them with 307 heads which are nothing special

if you are looking for a stock or VERY mild chev, they will be ok, there are much better heads around if those ones are worn though

Yeah, there are various 350 heads through the years, fuelly heads are always sought after, the last 3 digits is how you identify chev heads. ie. 461 fuellies, 462, 291, 292, 186, 041, 492

there are different numbers depending on combustion chamber size, valve size, spark plug type, displacement of engine and year of manufacture

you can classify them into 4 types- heavy and lightweight heads
and small and large combustion chambers

me, I would be looking for (early) heavy heads will small 64cc chamber with at least 1.94 valve size. 461, 462, 291, 292 fall into this category

same heads only later lightweight are 186, 041, 492

I would be talking to an importer or reconditioner because if you dont have a ID guide, it is hard to know what you are looking at

If you want a really nice motor you cannot beat aftermerket heads, world products, edelbrock and brodix all make good ones
