Bad fuel Consumption...Possible causes?

G'day Guys,
I have a mate who has a rodeo 2wd space cab V6 which is a 99-00 (can't remember  ) Of late he's been returning pretty ordinary fuel consumption figures. Is there any common problems that could be investigated? I remember someone talking about the oxygen sensor on them in a previous post, but buggered if i can find it

Is been slowly getting worse apparently, its gone from 15L/100km a few weeks ago upto 19L/100km this week (mine isn't that bad towing 1.6ton of boat! :? ) It has about 150 000kms on it.

My V6 Frontera is very sensitive to the condition of the air filter. On the Cape trip I got 13.5-14lt/100km up and 17lt/100km return with a dirty filter. Check the air flow metre for crap also.

Check the coolant temp sensor readings, and IAT sensor readings. If one of these is mis-reading then it will run rich (cold start and cold running mode)

Dealer can check. But if you can get the specs off the net all you gotta do is probe them with a multimetre and compare the readings to the factory specs. Does it drive okay????or is it a bit slugish.

Thanks for the replys guys, my mate took it to the mechanic's last week and apparently it had a cracked idle (or similar adjustment screw, mate wasn't sure  ) and was causing it to run cold start mode ;) As far as i know its been running better now, havent spoken to him though for a week or so..
