I went looking in pick-a-part for an internally regulated bosch job off a nissan L series motor, from memory a 60 amp job, then took it to an auto elec to have it modded for higher output, I think about 110 amps, and installed with the external regulator disconnected.

I think the output is lumpier, and at idle the output voltage is low, but once the revs are up it's fine. The idea of going for a bosch job is that it's easier and cheaper to get parts for it than the original hitachi unit.

I don't think you'll get a nissan one of higher output from an MK/Q/160. I guess you can mod your current one if you want to keep it stock. But in Oz at least the alternator you got was dependant on what model nissan you have. ie, my patrol came with a Hitachi, however I got my replacement bosch from another model nissan.

Considering alternators wear out I'd be looking for something that you can get parts for locally, assuming it fits ;)

Fair point. Try and find a large output alternator that will fit in your original housing. It can be done as i have a denso front on a bosch alt.
