What are all the ideas to limit backlash?
1. Part Time Kit Conversion
2.

2. Turn up the radio...

There is no cheap and easy solution. A part time kit would be your best option IMHO

sometimes ur end plates can be badly worn and that makes the backlash really bad.. but mostly the only way round it is a part time kit..

Double cardin in the front drive was the answer for me.

Went from seriouse/extreme backlash to none at all overnight.
Have not had a problem since
Oooh I hated that sound. Drove around with it for about 2 weeks clenching my teeth followed by cranking the stereo, followed by clenching my teeth, followed by cranking the stereo followed by........

Can't be good for the driveline.

Is the sound a metallic pinging type sound... I hope not, otherwise ill have to have a look at my front diff too... after just replacing the rear...

2. Remove front and rear diffs, and have them reco'ed or at least backlash adjusted, replace CV's and drive plates, replace telescopic joints in tailshafts, etc, etc.

3. Learn to live with the "feature" of full time 4WD's. :)

Some of the backlash will be in the centre diff.......so remove and readjust.

Mate, you will fiond it is in your front c/v shafts and drive plate splines, but when you back and forth, it is heard as a clunk in the transfer...not where the problem is at all....put everything in neutral, chock the wheels first, then get under neath and rock the front taiolshaft then the rear...you will notice a large diff---erence in the two

CV's have just been replaced.
I wasn't aware I could get my diffs backlash adjusted. I do have factory lockers, does this make any difference?
Who is best to do this in Brisbane/Gold Coast as there is play in these aswell.

How much to replace telescopic joints in the tailshafts?
I don't mind putting up with backlash but I don't want to wreck it either because of excessive backlash. Prevention being better than cure although it could be too late for that.

Keep the ideas coming guys.
Thanks.

arer you sure it's not normal as said below???

Uncle has a new 100 series and it has horrible clunking in low 4wd, not helped by having a sensitive throttle and that hugh engine torque available.

Disco Dave has a bit in LR with central diff locked up, and seems to be normal for this type of vehicle - although it did get a bit better when new R&Ps went in lately :)

It definitely wasn't normal but the CV's have gone in since and I haven't driven it since then but the mechanic still thinks there is way too much backlash in the transfercase.
I hope you are right though and I kind of believe you could be. Really hope. He seems to think it is in the transfer case however when I checked the backlash the transfercase was in neutral and auto in 'D'. I put the transfercase back in low range but never put it in neutral to put it in gear so I suppose it would have felt differently if it were in gear.
