I no longer rate a TB42 as a Boat anchor TURBO BUILD UP

I just got my SWB GQ Back on the road Today and I have to say that anyone that calls a TB42 a Boat Anchor, has No Idea what a little bit of Artifical Aspiration can make.
Here is my Turbo Build Up
For Fuel, LPG Only, I'm using a Impco L Convertor
Impco CA225 Mixer in Blow Thru configuration with the balance Hose
(CA225 are rated a 329cfm that is for draw thru @ atmospheric pressure or blow thru at how ever many psi you like, pressure does not affect the cfm) so there how much cfm does a tb42 need?
Here is the formula
CARB CFM = CU.IN. X RPMS divided by 3456 X VE%
CFM = 255 X 4500 / 3456 X 1 (100% for Boost)
CFM = 332 well thats close enough
I made a adaption plate a mounted a XF Throttle Body where the Carb was.
I modified a s/s RB25 aftermarket turbo manifold, cut the flange plates off that manifold and welded a extractor plate for a tb42 on.
I used a T3/T4 Turbo with a a/r 50 front cover.
I looked after my ignition using a MSD Boost Retard Timing Master and I have to say my Factory Coil was not up to the task (surprised me abit as many of you guys sware by them) so I used a Pertronics Flame thrower 40,000volts which has 1.5ohms of resistance built in, there for no more ballast resistor.
She creates 8psi of boost by 2200rpm and pulls hard to 4500, no flat spots.
I have to say the TB42 susprised the hell out of me.

what approximately was the cost to do this for you?

was talking to a guy who has done this today to a tb42e (injected) and from memory costs where....
Turbo (t03/04) 3-4 hundred, manifold (diesel turbo) $350, intercooler e-bay special $250, and 30b rotary injectors dont know cost of these.
Is only running factory computer so is fuelled up down low but I think he said 220-230 rear wheel hp.
How good is that. Apparently goes really well. I think he is looking to put aftermarket piggy back computer on it too for better tune

Nope, Turbo or not a TB42 is still a boat anchor. Useless peice of shit engines with plastic cylinder heads that love to crack.

Hey Artificial Aspiration,
Are You the guy that rang me about the manifold i was selling on Ebay, (i mentioned modifying an RB20 one to fit a Patrol) and then told me how you used an oxy to bend the pipes. You told me that there was enough length in the bends to stretch the extra length required. ?
Good job anyhow. I would love to see some pics when you get a chance.

I cant say I regret doing the V8 conversion but Birdy does well with his 4.2 Turbo. I reckon a turbo would be fun to drive when you hit boost. Are you going to put on a Blow off valve. I would.

Hah! I heard one of those going off on Lygon St Carlton the other night. It had to be a fake one, it went off about 20 times at low revs without any audible gear change. Or am I being harsh?

The turbo conversion really makes it a great toy to drive, It throws you back into the seat from 1800revs to redline, Plus a huge surge of torque when the boost comes on. I would do the conversion again any day, if you ask me the best dollars I every spent on the rig.
What does it cost? Welll it cost me bit over $2200 (No more then the 35's and rims really) when you add all the small things, stainless piping, clamps, silicone hose, all the hours with the tig tourch modifing the manifold, extractor plates, making dump pipes, sump mods, pipe work, oil feed lines, hours and hours of building bits and pieces which you don't think of before and then soon forget about after. It's not like going to Safari, buying a turbo kit and bolting it on (with instructions), making the kit yourself takes time and dollars and more time. Once you have components I've got, you could fit it in 2 hours
raptorthumper you guested it, it's me I ended up having to extend 1 runner, not too bad really, I must say it's great to pull up beside those V8 cruisers at the lights and blow them away
GQPatrol V8 & bogged Not just any boat anchor, a bloody fast one!
Anyway Guys here's the bad bit , I got a letter from the ATO a couple of days ago and it looks like I own them a few $$$ So I have no choice then to sell a few of my goodies, So I'm going to sell a package, Turbo, Dump pipe,Turbo to Intake Manifold Pipe(Impco CA 225 Mixer plumbs in the middle), also a pipe that goes from Turbo straight to throttle body (so you can run draw thru LPG OR Petrol Carby if you wish) Turbo Manifold, Turbo Intake Pipe, Intake Manifold Adaption Plate (bolts to where Carby was) and Throttle Body, Oil Supply Line, Oil Return Line and Sump. The MSD will be sold seperately. I'll take photo's tomorrow and list all the gear in the Forsale section with pic's.
Cheers

I won't deny a V8 is fun, but you sure you weren't driving the 3.0l Skyline 6 cylinder?
You've obviously never driven a real useless POS engine, try a Camira or Saturn 1600 motor some time. I reckon the TB42 is a good strong donk and moves along alright, maybe you were granny driving it too much, should have taken it out to 6500 more often without a turbo even
Yeah I did crack a 14yo head with only 350,000km on it after cooking it in mud, but that didn't stop me driving/thrashing it with an oil/water mix for 6 months. And it was still going when I pulled it out.
When some of your new jap wonder motors have 350,000km on them in 10 years time, come and tell us what a real POS motor really is. Next you will be telling us how weak GQ gearboxes are compared to Roadrangers.

Hey mate give us a price on the manifold and if it is not ridiculous consider it sold I will come pick up asap. That is if you are willing to seperate.
I might actually be interested in turbo as well just depends
PM has been sent btw

No offence but you'd be silly to separate the gear, it's worth more as a kit...

Heh, yeah. I agree, the TB42 can seem like more of a POS motor if you baby it too much. They do tend to sound pretty noisy, and you think you are thrashing it to death already at 2900 rpm, but if you just close your ears and keep pushing the pedal down they do pretty well. Wouldn't mind a turbo setup myself if I could keep it dual fuel with the petrol carby.

It is possibile if you went draw thru with carby and lpg

Do you have a mixture meter in the car to check if the engine runs not to lean?

i dont know how much diff the tb42 sounds to the tb45 but i rekon mine sounds better when i push it past 3k.
