Heya,
Seems the ?primer pump (not sure of the technical term) on top of the fuel filter housing has crapped itself. Are these a repairable item or am I up for a new one from Nissan at great cost

Any alternatives ?

You can use a Cav assembly which includes the primer head, filter and glass bowl, although it will need to be mounted as it is not plug n play swap, also your water alarm light will be disconnected for a viewing glass. problem with the original parts is the filters are bought from the cheapest seller and the filtering standard will never be controlled before the consumer as there is no industry standard/reputation to adhere or protect, so for all filters I go with reputable brands with a reputation not 'any filter' Nissan filters.

Some people have trouble with the cav units due to poor fitting of seals etc causing air leaks although they have been sold almost unchanged for decades, they are an industry standard. Filter changes come in at around $6 forever after.
They are reputed to filter down to 6 micron although this may be near the end of the filters life, expect 8,9,10micron so around the same as the standard Nissan filter should be - if it is.
They do a good job on TD4.2s although the softer 3.0L pumps need a finer filter I believe.
They prime 2x faster than the standard filter and replacement bits can usually be picked up in any small town.

One of the first jobs I did on my car was to replace the original with a cav, the original is now a backup if stuck somewhere.

Don't know how much Ben Dover at Nissan sells the heads for, possibly his half brother at the wreckers might see you through?

Hey there, I had problems priming my cav type filter and from what I was told on this thread I decided to go back to standard. http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... uel+filter

To do this I had to buy a whole new primer pump just to get the water sensor thingy on the bottom of the standard filter. I now have a cav adaptor, and another primer minus the sensor spare in the shed. Pretty sure the cav will be fine with some new seals in it. I prefer the simplicity of the standard filter however. PM me if interested.

Spoke to a diesel mech in Katherine who states he doesn't recommend the CAV filters, simply because they dont provide the same (poorer) filtration as the original. He believes it would be easier to bite the bullet and buy either a new one from Nissan or chase a sec hand one...

New filter head/pump gizzos are apparently 180 bucks

no offence what makes you think the primer is faulty?

its not a critical item, just handy when doing fuel filter changes.

It simply wont pump up at all and I need to do a filter change... living in the middle of buttfsk I dont want to take the risk of not being able to fire it up again after the change.... Or perhaps there is another way?

check for air leaks first.

replace it, i don't know what the cost over there would be.

the other way to pump it up is to use a electric fuel pump.

do the gu filter holder/pump bit have the bleed tap attatched? if so open it then pump till diesel comes out then close the tap.

Pumping the primer does bugger all... Have ripped the filter off carefully and replaced it with no luck. I tend to think the primer pump is forkwegianed

do you clamp the fuel hose when doing a filter change. also filling the filter with fuel before fitting helps.

Forget CAV Filter, Go for a RACOR (230R2) brand marine grade filter with inbuilt primer pump. They filter particles down to 2Microns. They have a drain rooster on the bottom to evacuate algae, water and other contaminants.
Best money you will spend.
