EGR valve and Intercooler??

Hi All.

As below I have a 2000 3.0TDi and have concerns about the engine problems. I have around 120,000km's on her now and all seems ok for now.

I have been discussing my concerns with a reputable diesel service business and they have recommended that the EGR valve be blocked off as they believe that this is a contributing factor in the failure of numbers 3 & 4 pistons. They have performed this modification on many GU 3.0l without anyadverse impact to the vehicle's performance. In addition to this they also add a fan to the intercooler as the standard setup is inefficient and does not get enough air flow to cool the air from the turbo. Has anyone had any experience with the EGR or intercooler on the GU 3.0l. I'm interested to hear if anyone else has had these mods done and what the result was.

Any assistance would be great!!

i would love to know too.

people have posted that they have disabled the EGR for testing purposes without problem. however that dosn't mean there is no long term damage.

also i would be interested in seeing the oil temps, even with the bigger sump. (i assume you have the ZD30 motor) hopefully i will fit one to mine soon.

a far as intercooler goes, proberly better to change the air scoop first tho a fan certainly will help at low speeds. otherwise fit bigger intercolller or water/air intersooler.

edit: pull the inlet manifold off and check if its sooted up.

I'm not too sure about the fact that blocking the egr will save #3/4 pistons, but I do know it doesn't hurt... maybe. Mine was blocked off for a while, but I still lost #3! Oil/water temps were okay though.

As with any fans fitted, it should help cooling at low speed obviously, but a fan will of course slow the airflow at highway-speeds (when cooling is most efficient anyway). Just make sure that cores' fins are clear and it is also clear underneath (another thing to check is, I had a hose blow underneath the intercooler that led to the waste gate vacuum valve - at first intermittent due to small hole growing larger). Nissan do spend a bit on R&D, I would leave the intercooler as is (haven't seen too many performance engines with a thermo on the intercooler??).

Good luck with the ZD30 - I'm ditching mine and going for the next size up (maybe even more). Love the Datsun, hate the donk (3.0L anyway)!

Hi,
Did yours blow while the EGR valve was blocked? How many k's and how long did you have it blocked?

Cheers
