If I use 6mm wire for positive and negative on my spotties do I need to use a 6mm earth off the relay?
Can you liken it to an exhaust system in that if there is a restriction on the flow it won't be as effective?
Cheers

You can liken it to an exhaust system in that the shorter the wire is, the less resistance there is. And the fatter the wire is, the lest resistance there is.
So basically, a short, fat earth wire straight to the chassis is better than a longer wire back to the battery (the chassis itself being a huge "pipe").
So, run your positive through the relay but run your earth to the chassis (or body).

so you have 6mm coming off the bat to the relay then 6mm again off the relay to the spotlights then 6mm on the negative of the spot light to ground if your asking weather you need 6mm for the coil of the relay then no what eva size wire your using to switch the relay use that to ground the relay usually 1.5mm or 2mm
