i have just brought my first diesel
its a ln106 hilux with the 2.8D in it
i am just wondering is it normal for the oil light to stay on 10 or 20 seconds after u start it 1st thing in the morning or should i look and changing the oil and filter.
thanks

sounds a bit long. check what oil filter is on it. there is often two types advailable. the cheaper one (which dosn't filter as well) does tend to cause the oil pressure to take a while to build up.

its farly normal for it to stay on for that long espeshaly if it first thing in the morning my 4runner stays on for that long but in your case i would replace the filter as well just to be shore

Dunno about 20 seconds that seems pretty long but yeah mine takes a bit to get oil pressure only probably 5-10 seconds though.
The reason that it takes longer in the morning is because the oil has time to drain out of the filter and oil cooler etc back to the sump and it takes a bit to fill everything. During stop start use the anti drain back flap in the filter is enough to keep things semi full.

thanks guys
its a valvoilne vo1 oil filter
its prob not 20 seconds but i am just use to in my other cars that the oil light just turns off as soon as u start it. it just feels like ages when u are staring at the light.
what oil should i use in it and filter(if the vo1 is the shit filter)
i will change the filter and new oil tomorrow
thanks

Ryco Z9 filter and castrol GTX Diesel in a 92 LN106 with 308,000kms, and the oil light goes off in less than 5 seconds
same oil and factory filters on a prado 3.0TD will do the same thing- 5 seconds for oil light to go off, but putting the penrite HPR Diesel (20w60) and ryco filter into the rodeo 2.5D will make the light go off immediately after start... odd that.

Ditto
I use a Z9 with Castrol GTD in my 91 LN106 with 404,000kms.....oil light on for maybe 3 seconds at most

afaik there are 2 different Z9 filters (Z9 & Z9a), i'll see if i can dig through the old pile and check the numbers.

HELL NO IT SHOULD NOT STAY ON THAT LONG
As some of the others have stated a Z9 filter with some decent oil should not stay on any longer than 3 seconds.
I run RYCO Z9 with SHELL DELO oil. Mine goes off immediately (Under 1 second).
If it is staying on that long after you change your oil and filter i would try an oil gallery clean either buy a bottle of something or go to a professional and get it fully cleaned; then try again.

Do you mean the one with the anti drain valve??

On the the diesel motors the car has to warm up then the oil will circulate though the motor befor the oil light will turn off

I use V01 filter with Rimula X-15W40 light is on for about 3-5 seconds.
If your light is on any longer than this maybe shut the engine down than re-start help to build up the pressure a bit {used to work on my old 60seriers}

yeah that can work aswell but it some time takes its time 4 the light to turn off on diesels

thanks for all the feed back guys
i have chnged the oil and filter with castrol gtx and a vo1 filter.
and it still goes on for just as long but it only does it when the engine is cold.
the engine is in top shape, doesn't blow any more than normal diesel smoke
so i am just guessing it takes time for the weight of the diesel oil to get up and around the block.
thanks

My'ns got 300.000k on it now I run genuine toyota filter $11 for me cost price and use valvoline super diesel and have done since new, my oil stays on for about 4 seconds on cold start up, 20 seconds as mentioned above I would be getting checked out. Most people I know with the 2.8 or 3.0 L seems to be around the 4 second mark. Do a proper time on it and just see how long exactly then you can determine yourself wether it's a problem or not. But 20 seconds or more and think you have a problem with it even on cold start up. Regards Steve M

Quick question for you, is the oil pressure sender unit working correctly??
I would suggest that you check the oil pressure with a guage if you can to verify that the sender unit is not at fault.
When I first got my ln106, it would take some time for the oil light to go out.
The oil was like thick mollasses, more like grease than oil.
I changed the oil 3 times in one week, the light would sometimes go out quickly, other times it would not.
After the 5th oil change in a 6 week period, the oil light would go out within 3 seconds after it sitting overnight, or for a week.
I decided not to use an oil clean out treatment, but instead to just let the diesel oil do its job, and change it when it became dark.
see my post here about it.

Just changed the oil after our trip into the red center, did 5300kms in 3 weeks, changed the oil just before we left for the trip, as it had 3k since the last one.
No I dont want to know how many times ive changed the oil.
Oil light goes out within 3 seconds, now the oil level will stay the same after an oil change.
The level would read full one day, and low the next, this was a little confusing at first, I thought I was having a ferrit moment
I am assuming that the oil was being held up in the cooler and filter body assy, or somewhere else inside, and it took a while for all the crud to be cleaned out of it.
Oil now stays clean for the first 1000kms after change now
.
I have to admit, that investing in a few quick oil changes has certainly cleaned up the inside of the motor better than I had expected, and I would happily reccomend doing so if your thinking of flushing the system.
Its up to you if you want to spend the money on oil and filters, im happy that I did mine.
Edited to add I use bp vanellus 15 40 and ryco z9

not sure with the ryco. i was running the cheap one for a while and it did take a while before oil light went out. i couldn't find the old filters so i can't tell. the currant ones i use are fram and again there is 2 different ones. the one i use has better filtering. i'm actually wondering if its the surf filter which has better filtering than the Z9, however the surf guys tell me theyare different threads.
also check what type of oil you use. these motors like the older thicker style oil. i notice when using an oil additive it cause the delay in oil light. my guess is the oil doesn't 'grip' the pump to well if its to slippery.

I call BS on that statement
I can take video of mine when it is on a cold start to prove it

If the oil isnt circulating and the motor is running, say good bye to ya bearings, rings and cylinder walls
. As soon as the motor turns over the oil pump is running (as it is connected to the crank), circulating the oil around the gallerys and through the filter. Cold oil is thicker than oil at opperating temp, so when the car is left overnight, the oil runs back to the sump (often resulting in a higher reading on the dipstick in the morning than after you have driven a bit) and its viscosity has thickened. When you start the motor it takes time for the oil to flow through the gallerys and build up pressure, hence why it takes longer to gain opperating pressure on a cold morning after not being run for the night.
The light is a worry too, as most of the time these will go out at low oil pressure, so potentially the light can be off, yet the normal oil pressure might not be being reached. If you are worried bout it check an oil pressure gauge on it and let it sit overnight, and see what readings you get. Check oil pressure under opperating temp too. The oil gallery cleaner mentioned before do work, but be warned, all the crap that they wash off goes straight into the sump, and can block up pickups and clog up the sump.
Layto....

I completely agree with everything you have said.
Mine has had the oil galleries completely cleaned which probably is why my oil pressure light goes out straight away; there is no crap to slow it down

Geez I reckon your one lucky bloke. I think you saved yourself some $$$ with what you did. I would say previous owner didnt beleive in oil changes and had no idea his motor would have been close to going bang. Regards Steve M
