I'm Marco from Costa Rica and I will appreciate if you guys can explain to me what exactly is an extractor and what it does, all that is because I have a Y60 SWB TD42 year 90, I’m doing some changes to it in order to improve my diesel engine and gain some more HP and speed. I’ll take the car to a Diesel lab in order to have the pump and injectors adjusted and I already change the exhaust system to a 2” ¼ because I don’t have a turbo installed yet. I was hoping that by making those changes my car would get a good improvement. If guys have more ideas on how to and what to do to gain more improvement for my car please let me know.

Extractors assist in getting the exhaust away from the engine and are a type of exhaust manifold. They would give you a small increase in power and may improve fuel consumption marginally. Best bet is to see your diesel mrchanoc when you get the pump etc done and get him to fit a good quality turbo. This would give you a big gain in power.
Just make sure the engine and cooling system are in good order.

As previously mentioned, Extractors will only give you a small increase in power. Make sure injectors and injection pump are in good condition, as problems here can make a big difference to performance and economy. Also have the shop check injection pump timing. Make sure tappet clearances are correct also.

Thank you very much for the explanation mates is clear now….There is something else I would like to know, if I Turbo my car, what I have to take in consideration, I heard that this is not a safe thing to do when an engine doesn’t come prepared from the factory, prepared to work with very high temperatures, and just to let you know my td42 has almost 400000KM.

With that high Km you will probably have to do a full rebuild.

A well set up turbo shouldnt decrease engine life, if run with aproriate boost, well set up engine and improved cooling the car will not have to work as hard to produce more power.

THere are a number of stories of people putting turbos on TD42 engines with KM's in the range you specified, every engine will be different though. You would have to run a moderate amount of boost and really just aim at increasing the engines overall efficiency.

I would save your $$$$$ and put a turbo on.
