How low is too low?

Has anybody heard of a 4wd with such low gearing that it can idle into a tree and just start turning the wheels in place rather than stalling? I suppose it would be most impressive if it could happen on bitumen, but any surface would do...

My GQ 4.2 TD used to do that. 72:1 from memory (when it was mine) Marks kit.
Wasnt too low but needed to use high range a lot more than I used too.

Would climbing trees make it less or more likely to fall over than climbing rocks?

I almost think it deserves it's own thread! I'll get some good mileage out of it nevertheless

well spotted dogbreath - that photo was published in (US) Fourwheeler magazine about 10 years ago or so- I have it somewhere.
aS to how low is too low - it all depends on what you are trying to drive and what you are driving it with. Greg's sierra runs about 120:1 and is sweet at that, but most sierras are happy at 80-90:1. Greg's car runs a 660 which makes relatively little torque below 3000rpm, but will rev to 9000 rpm, so it makes the shorter gearing work. 120:1 in a diesel, for instance, would be useless for anything except pure crawling - sooner or later you need to bump up a ledge or something and then the gearing becomes your enemy.

Once you've driven up the wall and are hanging from the ceiling ie the infamous "First Layer of Gravity", you know you've gone too far. Oh, if you attempt this you better use comp spec sticky tyres.
