Ford maverick??

Hey all,
Just picked myself up a 1993 ford maverick, 5sp, 220k's, 2 owners, serviced every 5k's, sliders, arb bullbar, owned by a diesel mechanic. For $9,500

What you think?> Good buy? Average buy or did I get ripped? I looked around for a while and this thing seemed by far the best..

Oh and it was owned by the bush firebrigade before hand which apparently was a good thing according to a few mechanics as they keep their vehicle in prestige mechanical condition (cos they don't want the thing shittin itself in a fire) I don't know about this.. But I mean it presented great, no panel damage what so ever, straight as ever and ran like a dream

I haven't actually purchashed it yet as I haven't left a deposit but the guy said he'd hold it for me until tommorrow. So I'm not obliged to buy it

Petrol or Diesel? Either way it sounds pretty good.

Sounds like a lot of money for a 4wd in these times, so hope it's a diesel. If not it sounds pretty high.

Having said that, you're near last of breed for the GQ, so they tend to always cost s bit extra.

It sounds pretty good to me.
If it has a good service history then that counts for a fair bit

I have a 93 Mav Petrol and it has rear wheel discs. Were they an option? Or have you got the base model.?

Bottom of the lines had drums.

If you're gonna convert may as well get a factory locker backend.

I am just wondering if it is indeed a 93. The 88 models had drums as there is one in Somerville. J ust don't know much about Mavs to say for sure.

88, 89 and some 90 mods

could have been a diff replacement, but theres more to it than just bolting up a diff to convert.

Yeah that seems a bit strange. Generally Mav's had higher spec than the Patrols - there was only the equivalent of the two top Nissan specs.

eg XL = ST and XLT =Ti.

It's not quite that simple but.

Sounds like a diff swap but you never know...

If drum brakes are an issue for you ...I would identify the exact fire brigade unit that owned this vehicle and get onto their mechanic...ask him the history of the vehicle and was there any reason for the drum brake rear end..plus its service history. Check the build actual year with the fire brigade . I almost bought a 96 Patrol that had been an insurance write off and it had been rebirthed with an 88 body.

Might be that the Drum brakes were to do with a heavy duty loading. Pretty sure that used to be a common thing on nissan utes.

Is it a ute? You didnt say... but maybe thats why.

IF so I'm not sure... I think I've seen Mav utes... but cant recall any that late a model.

If i was looking to buy a patrol I would by it.
Axles are not too exspensive with discs. so should not be to much of a problem.
Good luck with your new toy

Mine's an '89 base TD42 Nissan with drum brakes. However, the second owner bought it from a Ford Dealer when it was 18 months old, and the Ford delaer had decided to dress it to look like a Mav (but left the Nissan Badges - go figure!).

Are you sure yours is genuine Ford, or dressed to look like one. Also, did you check the compliance plate for the vehicle age? It's not a new body on an old chassis / running gear perhaps?

Does anyone know if the chassis number gives any indication / verification of age?

There was a neighbour who had an tray/ute , it looked like the model before the GQ as it had square headlights and a different grille, leaf front springs ,Maverick badges on the guards and a Ford Badge on the grille. Tricked up or first of the Mavs.

So was it a true Mav..?????

1993 ford mav wagon drums rear..

One good thing about the drum rear is that it is slighty wider and the axles are a give away item. Ive got a set you can have for free if you pay the postage.

Also the whole housing needs to be changed if you convert it to disc. Not just the axles etc.
