short shifter
short shifter
has anyone toyed with making a short shifter for an lj80 i see these ones on ebay to suit swifts will these also suit an lj80 or have a spare shifter that i could play around with thanks chris
HZJ73, lifted, crawler gears, double locked, sitting on 35's
First of all, make sure that your shift sheet and the retaining bolt are in good condition. In good nick, most suzuki gearboxes have a fairly slick action.
The easiest way to make a short shifter would be to add, lets say, a 10mm spacer between the shifter housing and the box, and add the same amount to the length between the pivot of the shifter and the little stub on the end. this will take some careful welding and possibly a trip to the heat treaters to maintain the same wear resistance after welding,
Next question, why? IMHO, short shifters are a useless rice accessory. The limiting factor in any road (syncronsied) gearbox will be the speed of the syncros. If you try to shift faster with a "short shifter" you will eventually beat the syncros, especially in a 25+ year old box.
The width across the gate is there to avoid miss shifts. In a 4wd, when you are bouncing around, you need to have a good idea where all the gears are, not with a tiny gap between the gates, which mich be cool in a straight cut box on a racetrack.
Just my 2c worth.
Steve.

Try putting a new shifter sheet and retaining bolt in, that will more than likely tighten things up. As Steve mentioned, the throw is quite acceptable when they are in good nick.Ruggers wrote:its becuase its in my little bros mud racer and i want to close up the shifter theres more room between gears than my cruiser and also it should make it tighter and more firmer shift when he gets it right

My box has had a new shifter bush in it (had to buy a gear stick, as the bush is a NSS part. After that and a new bolt, mine shifts good. Quick enough that i can shift cleanly without the clutch on the rocks.
