Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Looking in the near future of putting gq diffs under my 82 4 door rangie. Any pics or feed back from anyone thats done this operation would be appreciated!!

I would only put GQ's in the front and go 80 series in the rear.

I have done both and by far that is the best way to do it. Front GQ is almost a bolt in using the GQ radius arms, you need to make up a new steering arm and panhard and remove a brake line but thats it pretty much.

The rear is a bit more work regardless of wether you decide to go GQ or 80, it requires moving mounts, making new ones etc, new spring and shock mounts etc. For both ends you will need to redrill the flanges on the diffs but standard tailshafts are close enough to the right length. The reason the 80 rear is better is 3 fold.

1) It lines up with the output of the TC better so less vibrations
2) For above reason, with a rangie tailshaft and a GQ diff, expect to blow up uni's all the time
3) It is full floating.

thanks for the tips maggot.... the idea is to keep everything cheap an " of the shelf" so to speak. Undecided what to do with the rear, whether keep the a frame or go 4 link. The 80 rear end sounds like a viable way to eliminate those vibrations... anyone else on the board done this?

I would only go the Jap route if u get the diffs cheap and can access cheap engineering or DIY otherwise check out upgrading what you've got eg. with retro fit JacMac axles, upgraded CVs and so on. It may prove cheaper and easier to upgrade and this does not require engineering certs and keepo original higer diff clearance.

Search this on the Rangie forum, there's alot of options, like Jacmec axles and toy centres.
I know where you can get a whole toy conversion with Jacmac axles for a grand, its a bargain

the ultimate patrol would have an a frame rear and a v8 and the ultimate rover would have patrol trasfer and diffs

Agree entirely. The TCase reduction ratios in the GQ are a joke. Even the Pathfinder is better.

If you dont mind spending a lil more why not just get maxis and be done with it.
$1870 each end and you can say you dont have nissan under you!! :D
