Ok guys, the strangest thing happened to me today, i got the cruiser in an ugly situation and changed gears, well the gear stick shifted to nuteral but the gears held reverse, now i'm thinking i might be able to relocate the selector through the top of the box if thats the problem. Ive also been told this is a common problem as one bloke wanted to have a crack at sorting it out there and then.

Any idea's fella's.

Better mention its a 62 series with the H4 switch on the dash.

Could be that the seal that sits under the gearstick has perished letting the gearstick float and the stick has jumped out of the selector. Pretty easy to fix if its the case.

Just pull the gearstick boot off then push down on the ring that is at the bottom of the stick and rotate in counter clockwise for 1/4 of a turn and pop it out. Should be a seal under that if its perished repllace it. Also make sure there is a little plastic cover either on the end of the stick or stuck in the selector if not replace it too.

Yes it is a common problem.

I had the same thing happen to me on a trail.

I was doing a steep downhill run, and i decided to select angel gear neutral. At the bottom, the bullbar hit the deck and the car came to a sudden halt. When I tried to continue forward, i was unable to select any gears. Gear stick in neutral, but the reverse lights were on, and when i let out the clutch, all i got was a slight grinding noise. Reverse had partially engaged and locked out all other gears.

Solution: Pull the rubber boots out from around the gear selector, then pull the carpet right back. You will need to remove the floor plate around the selectors from memory, so you can see the whole top of the gear box.

Once you can see everything, you will need to remove the reverse light switch off the top of the gearbox. This will allow you to be able to get to the reverse shift rail. If you use a screwdriver down the whole, you will be able to pry the reverse rail backwards back into the neutral position. It will be very tight and will cause you a lot of frustration, but you will eventually get it. You may have to modify a screwdriver or something.

Once it clicks backward, you should then be able to select all the other gears. It does not require you to pull the selectors out.

same happened to me on sand.. had to reverse a long long way to get back out on the black top ... nothing like waking up to 4 holes dug under the wheels of your car

ended up pulling the selector plate from the top of the box and dropping another one on it... as i had it sitting here

you could simply push everything back into place whilst its off if you cant do it via the reverse switch

Thanks ice, ill have a go through the reverse light switch first, i may be able to get a top selector unit from a mate but it'll cost me, so will see how we go.


Is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening again ??

has been a few years since i did it but remember talking to someone about it and the problem is supposed to be from flogged out bushes in the selector shafts

if youve taken the top plate of have a look... ive got a bit too much on atm to dig up one for a look. id end up making them if i did lol
