Turbo Whistle

Drove the cruiser (96' 80 Series GXL 1HZ Turbo) yesterday for about 100k's towing a boat and had no dramas. But after stopping for a couple of hours before driving home unloaded, noticed the turbo whistle was considerably louder in the cab when accelerating? I would say that it was at least twice as loud. It actually sounded like more air was being drawn in or the turbo was working harder. There was no increase/decrease in power just more noise. I assumed maybe an air leak somewhere but couldn't see anything noticeable in the dark. And there was no reason for anything to have moved. Only highway driving...
Any Clues?

How old the turbo?
Not sure about the age of the turbo??? When i bought the car i was under the impression that it was a factory turbo.
But after getting it home and having a few dramas found out is was aftermarket.
with my old turbo it wistled real loud one da y...............................
and then went bang!
So when it went bang that was it? Stuffed?!? I have replaced the oil line from the sump to the turbo including all
fittings etc except the adaptor into the bottom of the turbo. Could this be blocked? If so will this save it? It's a
genuine toyota turbo that has been fitted. Are these know to have any problems? What sort of milage should
they get out of them? Could it be anything else?

My Disco has a warped manifold which makes the turbo noise pretty loud. Just a leaky bit.

most leak's will have a effect on performance, intake leaks will lower boost pressure and can be chased with a spray bottle and soapy water sprayed around all elbow's hoses and connection's o the intake side. exhaust leaks before the turbo will stop some of the exhaust gas from passing the turbine wheel meaning it will turn slower that normal producing less boost , and can be seen by black soot around the leak. you can check the turbo oil passages by removing the supply and return lines and blowing through the turbo oil passage, the oil passage should be pretty free flowing and 95 percent of the oil flowing through their is for cooling purpose. then try blowing in to the sump via the turbo return/drain line. you can also check the end float of the turbo by removing the exhaust and intake piping from the turbo and trying to move the shaft "with your fingers", this will indercate the condition of the bearing and also allow you to inspect the compressor and turbine wheels for chips of sections that may have broken out. try that and pm me if you are still having drama's or if their is still any questions.

balzacks on the money. I've had this happen in a b-double I used to drive, it was a screwed manifold and the noise in that thing was unbeleiveable, at 600hp the noise was very very loud! :D

It's because you were facing the other way on your return trip, so it will naturally sound different.

Actually, I have no idea ?
