can't help you with the conversion at all but a little info i have been told that the ecotec motors are not good for four wheel drive conversions as they do not like the angles. i am just going off what i have heard .

Divorce tcase is rare out of the L28 but is still available. Cheaper to use one of them than any adaptor hit.

Hey Buddy, I'm currently running the Ecotec V6 in my GQ Patrol SWB (ute converted), and was in the same boat as you... not much info about it because it "hasn't been done". You'll get told lots of stories about not being worth it blah blah... no power blah blah... or easier to throw in a V8. The V8 might actually be easier because it's been done to death, everyone who's anyone could do it in their sleep. I took mine for a run to check speedo etc, running 35 MTRs and at half throttle acceleration... lost traction. I done the conversion for the simple fact... distributer died on the original engine and I had the VT commodore sitting there... seriously. But it's cheaper on fuel than the straight 6, injection for offroad and cheaper rego than a V8. It's first REAL run will be this weekend, Middlemount - Darwin (approx 3500km). Engine fits nicely (I think you could actually put 2x V6 in there) running the VT EVERYTHING... wiring harness, fuel pump, wiper moter, instrument cluster, combination switch, light switch etc. Steering column and fan/air con etc are original GQ. NOTHING is below the chassis rails, absolute lowest point is the chassis awesome ramp over, and since its mainly for rocks and offroad the auto... well... try it before you knock it. In my opinion, it was worth it.

Ford straight six would be the swap of choice, rather than a commo v6, imho.
But anyway, just in relation to Hoppo's comment - dellow do the following for an MQ/K:
NISSAN PATROL (1980 – 1987) MQ–MK Petrol or Diesel 4 or 5 Speed
• Chevy V6 & V8 into Nissan Patrol
• Holden V8 253 / 308 into Nissan Patrol
• Ford V8 302/351 into Nissan Patrol
• Chrysler V8 – 273 / 318 into Nissan Patrol
• Chrysler 6 cyl 245 – 265 into Nissan Patrol
• Falcon 6 XR – XF into Nissan Patrol
• Falcon 6 EA and on into Nissan Patrol
• Commodore V6 3.8L into Nissan Patrol
Ask for detailed fax or email sheet on your model.

I did see this on ebay which might make a different engine an affordable option, since the kit looks like going pretty cheap:

As far as the GQ goes:
NISSAN PATROL 1988 & later GQ & GU 4.2L Petrol or Diesel
(Includes Ford Maverick)
• Chevy V6 & V8 into Nissan Patrol 1988 and later models
• Holden V8 253 / 308 into Nissan Patrol 1988 and later models
• Ford V8 302 / 351 into Nissan Patrol 1988 and later models
• Falcon 6 Cyl XR – XF into Nissan Patrol 1988 and later models
• Falcon 6 Cyl EA & later into Nissan Patrol 1988 and later models
• Commodore V6 3.8L into Nissan Patrol 1988 and later models
Note: We do NOT do any kits for the Patrol with a 3 litre petrol.
