lock nuts

Hey guys ive got my new driving lights but i live in a dodgy area. Any wacky (or sensible) ideas on how to stop them getting swiped?

placa a tack of weld on the thread but make sure you have enough bolt left to cut off later on should you need.

Most reputable 4WD outlets have lock nuts for driving lights but that aint the be all-end all of stopping driving lights from being stolen. Driving light lock nuts come in different threads, so it's just a matter of checking the details on size and thread of the mounting bolts.monkeyplex wrote:Hey guys ive got my new driving lights but i live in a dodgy area. If you have Lightforce, there isn't real lot you can do to protect them as the light is bolted to the base in a way that makes them an easy to get off.

Sorry, but you did say wacky idea. My old hilux had a cover that went over the spot light bolts that was screwed on with security screws...funny shapped screw heads!

extra bit of thread after nut add a hole place a lock through the hole bam intant anti theft

when I get the good ones for the roof I'm just going to make them detractable ... so i can store them in the shed when I'm not wheeling

most spotlights just use a normal bolt and nut for it mounting, but some spotlights dont have long enough bolts. you put the spotty on the mount, and after all the washers and so on, theres not much thread left.
usually you can take the spotty apart, take the bolt out and get one thats about 10mm-20mm longer.
the best way to make spotties theft proof is to not have spotties at all. but, you can use the special locking nuts you get at 4wd shops, but most times you can get them off with stilsens or a vice grip with sharp teeth.
but what i like to do is, replace the mounting bolt with one thats a little bit longer, mount up the spotties, and about 5mm-10mm down the thread after the nut, put a good tack on the bolt. not much, just enough to kill the thread. you need penetration, and not just a little tack on the surface which can be knocked off.
a lot of trouble to keep spotties on, but the best thing about this method is, you can still loosen the nut to adjust the level of the spotties, but still not be able to take them off. this is really good, because everyday, my car is unladen, and its empty i set the level of the spotties. but when we go camping for the week end, and we load up, the back drops and we end up looking for koala's int he tops of the trees. so i get a spanner, loosen the nut, drop them down, and its all good to go. and do the same when you get back and unload.

If you can remove the bolt the mounts the light then take the bolt out and see the people at coventry fastners http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/busSear ... 98f7e639e9 and they can fix you up with tamper proof bolts and one way screw bolts, when used with locknuts (same place) or hardware store no one can get them off with out the security tool.
