I have a 1996 GLS pajero 3.5 that will only go into 2wd and low range 4wd. i say this because they are the only gears that the lights stop flashing and diff lock does not flash. I have read previous posts and i will check the actuator rod/shaft jammed, vacuum lines and differential sensor switchs. I have also noticed that i cannot find or get neutral in the transfer gear box!!! I have stuffed around with the transfer gearbox leaver where i think neutral is but it always stays in gear. Could someone tell me if this problem is a issue related to the above or must i look elsewhere? I have only had the Pajero for a couple of weeks...........no warranty......just got caught i guess.

You don't mention if you've got an auto or manual - I'm fairly certain the auto transfer doesn't have neutral.

I'm also fairly certain that the rest of your problems are purely electrical - the switches on the transfer case for 4H and 4HLc are not indicating properly, so the ECU controlling the lights is a little confused. If the lights all behave properly in 4LLc then the front diff actuator and switch are probably OK. If you have drive in each position I don't believe you have a serious problem.

Cheers,

Scott

i have since looked at the Pajero more closely and got most 4wd gears. The only problem now is when i put it into 4h (No diff lock) the top two lights flash and the diff lock light flashes as well, the diff lock light should not come on at all except in 4hlc and 4llc............all other gears work ok........any ideas?

I'd still look at transfer switches - if the switch for 4H isn't working properly the ECU doesn't know what's going on. It knows it ISN'T in 2H or 4HLc - what should it do?

Find the switches, clean and test them. Once you're certain they're working properly, see if you still have a problem.
