winches and what battery?

Guys i have done a search but can't find any decent info.
what are the pro's and cons of having your winch connect to either primary battery or secondary battery.

Ideally you should connect to both. This becomes difficult depending on what sort of charging system you employ for battery management. I myself run a pirrana system with the winch connected to the main battery.
However if you connect to both batteries you circumvent the charging / management system.
For heavy winching I have a manual switch which brings both batteries online in parallel. What system do you run? This will aid in working out your best option.

Using the redarc system

Google is good. Looked up your redark and they actually have a PDF sheet detailing dual battery setup for winching. This will enable you to winch of two batteries whilst stillhaving your normal battery management system.

If your aux battery is a conventional Deep cycle then I wouldn't use it for winching. If it is a Cranking/start battery then its fine. Likewise if it is an AGM deep cycle, they can handle high curent draws. Conventional wet cell Deep Cycle batteries prefer smaller current draws for extended periods (fridge, work lights,....), rather than short bursts of high current loads.

Extremely good point. I run Yellow tops so didn't even think to ask you what sort of batteries you run!

for whatever reason i hooked mine up to my deep cycle. I thought oh its just a cheap whinch, thats why its slow under load........then i hooked it up to my starter battery......well right o, what a difference.
I spose when deep cycles like probly 10A max as a constant draw and my winch draws about 70A no load......guess thats why.
cheers

Yeah correct.
You can quite happily run a winch from your start battery, but you will place heaps less load on your electrical system if you can run through both batts. As long as your secondary battery is capable. You will also get better performance from your winch!

Optima Yellow top are the go!
You get a high CCA battery with deep characteristics. Expensive but worth every cent.

My start battery is an Exide Stowaway Marine.....it weighs a ton but runs my winch a lot better than my ED5 deep cycle.

The drawing is rather Misleading, the REDARC controllers have a Jump start function on them so you can start from your second battery anyway, so all you have to do is supply +12V to the REDARC +AUX terminal and it joins both battery together in parrallel. ie Winching off both.
They have drawn that in a way, so it only brings both batteries together when the whinch has been activated from the controller

Sorry to hijack but i saves me making another post
Just got my Warn highmount
Quoted from Autobarn Yellowtop = $599
Part number= D31A
CCA= 900
Reserve Capacity (minutes)= 155
Volts= 12
Amp Hr. Capacity @20 Hrs= 75
Construction= SPIRALCELL TECHNOLOGY/SAE Posts/Deep Cycle
Maintenance Free and Completely sealed
Length= 326mm
Width= 165mm
Height= 242mm
Weight= 27.18kg
Quoted from HASTINGS DEERING for a CAT =$124.28
Part number= 175-4360
CCA= 710
Reserve Capacity (minutes)= 185
Volts= 12
Amp Hr. Capacity @20 Hrs= 100
Construction= Calcium Lead Alloy Grid Design/Stud Terminals/Deep Cycle and Starting Battery
Maintenance Free with Accessible Vent Caps
Length= 328.4mm
Width= 171.2mm
Height= 236mm
Weight= 27kg
Bang for buck i am thinking CAT; even if i have to buy one every year the Optima would have to last beyond five years to be price compatible
what are other peoples opinions

cool tips guys
was thinking though if connect to the aux battery and the load drains the battery belo12.7 vaults wont the redarc open and isolate the aux and then im stuck winching off a battery with no extra power supplied via the alternator.
Or am i thinking wrong.

I believe so but wont them running in parallel equalise the batteries creating an extended period of time before this would happen

Wait a sec if it is linked manually via the ON switch of the winch it can't close it; you would draw from both but only the main would receive charge
Novice at electricas so

nah not using the on switch was think just to the AUX so if something did die i still had one good battery.

Good thinking and most probably preferable by most

If you wire as per the PDF. When you press the winch in or out your redarc will switch both batteries to parallel. i.e. both batteries will power the winch. When you stop winching or release the winch switch the redarc will go back to normal operation. You could infact wire the relay from another switch on the dash which you could select when you like. This would allow you to goto parallel mode when you need or want too.

That sounds more logical
What do you guys reckon about the batteries i posted

AC Delco batteries. Just ask those who seen our dead winch effort in the Pirahna pursuit.
They are fully sealed. Recharge quickly. Higher rating than most of the equivelant sized lead acid batteries and garunteed for 2 years. An N70ZZ sized battery would sell for around $150.00 With a CCA rating of 730 amps. 160 reserve.
Top value for money
