What engine? N/A diesel run the smaller R151f gearbox (as apposed to H series found in Turbo and 4.5 Petrol models) which are not uncommon to pack up completely when used for heavy towing/offroad work.

There was a thread about this happening in 100 series recently.

My kids lego 4B's use the same box, O/K for a kids toy but not a Cruiser have replaced a few with a real gearbox in 78's and 100's. What was Toyota thinking when they did it. :!: :!: :!:

Cost cutting.... not as clunky/notchy as the bigger box... however my G52 is more notchy and clunky than my mates 80 series

How easy is the swap wally?

To anyone considering swapping, I will swap an 80 auto for the smaller R series manual from 78- 100 series (I need it for Hilux).

It can all be done using factory parts.

My father's went about 50kms while I was towing my MQ. Replaced by Toyota but the box is the weakest part of the truck IMO.

looks like a sleve has come out, and destroyed the main shaft and the transfer input shaft, going to be well over $3g!!

have seen this happen before too. They generally will replaec the sleeve with a afterarket replacement, im actually having one engineered so it shouldnt happen again

for $3g you should be able to pick up the parts from a wrecker like Wally has suggested and change over to a H series...

Or buy my complete auto setup from 80 series for $800 with transfer case, approx 120 000 km.

another shameless plug.

the h series box is definatly the only option in cruisers
dont waste cash trying to engineer a r series box to be better
it never will be

Re-Co Gearbox and rebuilt transfer...

STILL MAKES SAME NOISE!!

checked diff's = Fine
Motor = Fine

What else could it be, they have stripped them down tice and sent both back to gearbox bloke and cant figure out?

I should also say that they are looking after me, apart from them not being able to figure it out they have been profesonal and i am happy with there service.

Uni joints, or clutch release bearing... unless its motor related.
