ECU swapping 4AGE

Well, my electrical dilemmas continue unabated.
Due to a poor earth my (4age) ecu managed to fry itself and during my hunt for a replacement I have come across varying pin configurations and part numbers.
Depending on who I talk to there seem to be two scenarios:
a) As long as the pins config. is the same I'll have no dramas with it despite the numbers not matching (they are all the same up to the last two digits in a ten digit long number)
b) If the numbers dont match up dont put it in.
Ordinarily I would be inclined to go with scenario b but after speaking to a guy who has been wrecking 4age's for a long time (his words) he says that he has never come across an ecu with my numbers on it and that they are usually one of three different numbers & pin configs.
So what do I do? Do I fork out and buy the same pin set up only or do I keep trying wreckers until I find the right numbers too?
