hi all,
My old man has just bought a hilux SL5 2000 model and he is traveling to calcoringi west of katherine. he got two sets of tyres with the car 1 brand new road set and a set that needs replaceing. i am wondering what the best tyre for long trips (most driving will be dirt road) and short exploration trips is.
thanks for the ideas.

if he isn't doing anything to hard BFG All terrains would probable be the way to go, they are pretty quiet on road and fairly decent off road.
if you want something more aggressive either Goodyear MTR's or BFG Mud Terrains
thats just my opinon

My mate had BFG KM series AT's on his trip to WA (north). He had 2 de-laminate on him and one blew out the sidewall. I wouldn't trust them for long trips and I know of a few other people that wouldn't... Pirelli Scorpions or Cooper ST's would be my pic of the AT bunch, and extra points to Cooper for their km warranty..
Just so you know there's no bias, I have BFG Muddies on my truck

There was a massive thread on the right tyre choise for a northern adventre about 3 weeks back do a search I think it was in general tech
I think you will find all the locals up there run skinny little tyres and i guess they would be the easyest to get your hands on if you had problems as im pretty sure a non standard tyre size is not stocked up there

mate, I live in Mount Isa NW Queensland (Gulf Country)- I've done a few big trips around and I have BFG AT's and never had a problem- BFG's AT's are by far the most popular tyres up here- the local tyre place guy reckons he never gets people coming back complaining about BFG AT's- he reckon he can't say the same about Coopers
Meh...
I was speaking to a 4wd mechanic the other week and he told me that a batch of coopers were recalled and after hearing that I would'nt buy themGee wrote:mate, I live in Mount Isa NW Queensland (Gulf Country)- I've done a few big trips around and I have BFG AT's and never had a problem- BFG's AT's are by far the most popular tyres up here- the local tyre place guy reckons he never gets people coming back complaining about BFG AT's- he reckon he can't say the same about Coopers
I dont think you can beat the warranty that goodyear/beaurepairs offer they reckon that they will cover your tyres for damage for an extra $6 a tyre. When told about this I asked if It only cover onroad and the salesman said it did'nt matter if you jammed a star picket through it
EVER MET A SALESMAN THAT LIED?
