A Mate of mine at work has a GQ with the VL motor in it and for some reason it dies in the ass when he is driving it
He can be driving along at 100 then all of a sudden it will die in the ass and wont go above 50 and he has to pull over.. Once he turns it off and restarts the car its fine until a couple of minutes later then it dies again..
He has taken it to a few blokes round here and they cant find anything wrong with it ... He has replaced the fuel filter and when he cut open the old one there were white flakes inside........
Any help you guys have will be great
Cheers Dave

Mine would run for a while then die and if you left it for ten mins it would start again.Turned out to be the coil breaking down under heat and load.
cheers .....Vic

Thats what i thought too but the mechanic checked and he said it was fine but i still reckon its gonna be the problem cause he checked it when the car was running good not underload.......
What would be the best way to check it IE say test light in the car and go for a drive and watch the test light when it plays up....

I was stuck on the way to Cape york and a ford dealer put the coil on a tester which gave it a workout and it died as he stressed it.

hey bogan hows things ??
hows the misses uni going ??
the low pressure (in tank) fuel pump are comment to break down in the carby models 4.2 & 3.0
bogan ask your mate does it happen while driving uphills
even a slight rise will be enuf also while under light to medium throttle will do it also. at times
may sound funny but thay will even play up while parked nose uphill & left to idle for just 3-5 min
the pump sell for $130.00 genuine (trade)
if no to all above - he may have a carby freezing problem
witch would happen while driving when engines still cold or constant freeway speeds due the the heat elament under the carby base (honeycome type unit) that heats the intake charge and stove pipe can be a factor
pm sent with more info
cheers daryl

hi guys,
As i said in one of my above post i have the 3.0L carby rb 30 motor in my nissan Patrol and i will be driving along at 100km and the thing will just die and carnt get it over 50 k's either?? i pull over and either turn it off for a couple of mintues or give it a good couple of revs and it will go again fine until it has another moment. It is starting to shit me. I have been told it could be the coil or the carby is suffed. I know its hard to pinpoint something like this so i guess its time to start eliminateing things. $$$$$ here come the dollars.
i will still read everyones imput on this topic cause i can now see i am not the only one with this problem. Other then this problem i have its a bloody good motor.
so when i get it sorted out heres to no more problems PLEASE lol

the carby models have a heap of polution control s##t on them, which would do the same as the cat

No cat on the patrol is probably because it is classed as a commercial vehicle, not a passenger car.

O.K we pulled the pump out on the weekend and had a look and its clean as nothing blocking the intlet and the tank is clean as too
So we took it for a drive and nothing didnt do it, He also drove it into work this morning and it didnt do it either
So its back to the drawing board

my mate has one and wen its under load the choke somtime cliks on check that the choke isnt engaging cause that was his problem.
the easiest way to fix it is put a INJECTED HEAD AND TURBO ON IT

you dont need to change the head you just bolt the manifold up to it

Hey guys, sorry to bring up an old post, but I have been searching and searching the forum and there doesn't seem to be much info on this problem. i have a 96 model rb30 GQ and it has the same problem. You could be cruising along at 110k's and then all the sudden I loose power and struggle to do 60k's. I pull over for 5 mins and then it seems fine again for awhile. When its playing up I can put my foot flat on the throttle and the revs build up slowly, but it wont rev out....i have had the carbi rebuild and that didn't fix the problem either. and yes it is shitting me to tears as well :(
Hope someone can help.
Cheers

Spot on & the 7 seat ones that are classed as a passenger car are too heavy (GVM) to comply.

Hook up a fuel pressure guage & see of the pump is delivering the correct pressures while friving. This will eliminate or determine issues with the fuel system.

My patrol had the same problem, mainly doing it on cold mornings. I think it was the carby freezing, under full load and by the time you stop and pull the lid off the air cleaner the ice is gone (was never an issue during warmer weather)
I frigged around for ages trying to get to the bottom of the problem, and cracked the sh#ts and converted to straight gas(the best thing i ever did), using an injected manifold and impco mixer, it was much nicer to drive, a bit more power and torque, an the problem never raised its head ever again, so im guessing that its got to be a fuel related issue, and im positive its the carby freezing.

These motors had an auto choke....and after a while (a few years and 150.000k or so) the bi-metal spring would start to work sometimes and not others. Never did find out exactly why...dry joint inside it maybe....but when I repaced it ....never played up again.
Truck did exactly as described above .
I never tried to buy a new one ...just had a spare carby and used the one off that/ Was pretty interesting when it did it once on the climb out of the Abercrombie River on the Goulburn/TrunkeyCreek road with the camper on hey.
I also removed all the restrictions under the carby in the manifold ....and this did not hurt it at all..However the carby did freeze in really cold weather...and I overcame this by just turning snorkel head to face backwards, and istalled a stovepipe running from extractors that heated intake all the time during winter. The only problem I ever had with this sort of symptoms turned out to be auto choke tho.
HTH.
Cheers Keith

Hey since where handing out stupid advice why don't you go shave your balls with a steak knife?
Td42 is not the answer, if he wanted something slower than his rb30, that cost shit loads more to repair and maintain he would consider it.
Now for some advice that may help, if your sure its not fuel related (sounds like it is) these are known to have intermitent faults with the distributors, but what your describing sounds much more like fuel than spark....one question no one else asked....is it on gas or petrol?
